UAC Protected Windows

Post by reverett »

Hello,

I searched the forum on what I believed were good keywords and couldn't find anything that helped.

When I connect to Windows 7 machines I often see a red box in the upper left corner stating "UltraWNC running as application doesn't have permission to acces UAC protected windows. This screen is locked until the remote user unlock this window" (I included the displayed typos and grammar issues).

I'm guessing this is due to security settings in Windows 7. Is there any way to prevent these from popping up and if not, what does the remote user need to do to unlock?

Thanks!

Randall

Install UltraVNC as a service on the target machines.

(Edit: sorry, didn't notice this was ChunkVNC-specific.)

Thanks. Is installing as a service the only option? One of the things I really like about Chunk is that I can close InstantSupport before I terminate the phone call and I finish up know that nothing is left running on the remote end.

You can just have the end user present to answer the UAC prompts.

But you can also, while remotely controlling the target machine, right click the UltraVNC icon in the system tray and select "Uninstall Service".

There may be an even easier way for ChunkVNC to make itself disappear after user. (Perhaps it already does so?)

Fogive me, but I've never been on the other end... I've asked the users if they see the red box I am seeing and they say they do not. How do I direct them to "have the end user present to answer the UAC prompts"?

This would be prefered over the install/uninstall service but I have not been able to figure out what they need to do to clear.

Thanks!

Hello,

This post seems to have gone a different direction. I'm not sure my last question was ever answered. I don't want to install as a service.

Your post: "You can just have the end user present to answer the UAC prompts"

My post: "Forgive me, but I've never been on the other end... I've asked the users if they see the red box I am seeing and they say they do not. How do I direct them to "have the end user present to answer the UAC prompts"?"

I've asked the remote user if they see a red box. I've always been told no.

Do you have a description of how the UAC prompts are presented and how the end user answers the prompts?

Thanks,

Randall

Randall,

They typically don't see the same red window as you... however, they will see a dialog asking for permission to allow that action.
Just ask them to allow the activity and you will then be able to continue.

Sorry for the late reply, back from vacation. :)

When the red notification is presented on the upper left hand corner of the viewer windows that generally means that User Account Control has prompted the user running InstantSupport. They will have to click Continue, Allow or Yes depending on the OS so that InstantSupport can create a directory in Program Files and run as a service.

Without running as a service the Viewer will have no way of controlling User Account Control prompts.

There is a tray option (right click on icon) to "ReRun as Admin"that will not create the Program Files directory and continue to run in the Temp directory but I haven't tested it much and prefer to install the service myself.

If you are trying to Install as Service or ReRun as Admin and the user you are helping doesn't know the administrator credentials then you will not be able to do certain tasks in Vista/7 that require this elevated privilege level.

lol, thanks for the love. I was stuck in Montana on my way to Oregon we hit a deer with my car at 2am just 6 hours into the trip. :(
Life is not getting any less crazy and I wish I had more time to spend here. :)

AFAIK redge has a new little one to take care of at home. Hopefully he will be back some day.

VNC Server:
Install UltraVNC as a service
Restart the server
Logon the server

VNC viewer:
Logon the remote server
Click the [Send Ctrl+Alt+Del to host] (the left icon on the toolbar)
When on popup form , clicked Yes.

Locked the remote server, logon the remote server by vnc viewer.
It works.

2 points
1. It's usually not required to reboot the server after you install the service
2. The Ctrl-Alt-Del won't typically work if the server is Win 7. Use the assistive keyboard (on screen keyboard) to send the requisite Ctrl-Alt-Del
