Double Connection Needed

Post by Cheval »

Now I'm really nit picking here, but I've found that when I bring up a VPN connection, the first time I try to connect to the server over the VPN UltraVNC opens with a grey screen and doesn't refresh. I have to close it down and try again which works. It only appears to happen on the first connection attempt after bringing up the VPN access. I'll have to check further but it's like UltraVNC isn't resolving the DNS on the first try...?

I've worked out that when the server is in the screen saver mode, it is then that I need to reconnect the second time to get rid of the grey screen.

You could try turning on "capture alpha blending" in the VNC server options. The screen saver is probably writing directly to the video buffer or something.

B: I've already done that but no help. I also tried turning off the "Enalble Blank Monitor" option.

As the server is running XP, should I leave the "Remove Aero (Vista)" option on as I expect it's ignored anyway?

Yes I think you're correct; it shouldn't matter. You could also try tweaking the screen resolution/colors, compression/protocol options for VNC, etc. but I don't really have a fix for you. Anyone else?

Does it happen even when the screen saver is very simple / blank?

That's the irony; the screen saver was blank.

I've just now changed it to being the WinXP logo one and see if the activity makes a difference.

One thing also that I have noticed, is that if I re-establish the VPN before the screen saver kicks in, I don't need to double connect. Maybe it was due to the blank screen saver not having any data to send back, but on the re-connect the login box was then showing thereby having data to send?

That's a great theory, and I'd tend to agree, but when you move the mouse or press the keyboard then SOMETHING should happen. Have you tried refreshing the screen via the UltraVNC Viewer menu?

Yes, changing the screen saver to something that changed (eg. not blank) worked! Strange this behavior only started in 1.0.9.6.1?!?

Yes I also tried the refresh button on the menu but it didn't help. There was no response until you moved your mouse over the window, closed it and re-opened it again, then you are shown the login box.

If anyone can reproduce this we should report it as a bug to Rudi.

Thanks for sharing your tale of woe, Cheval.
