UltraVNC Server w/ iPad RealVNC client - AES won't work!

UltraVNC Server w/ iPad RealVNC client - AES won't work!

Post by AH79 »

I have puchased the RealVNC iPad app and have UltraVNC Server 1.0.9.5 installed on Vista 32-bit.

It works perfectly without encryption (locally and remote) but I want to use the iPad from work to connect to my PC at home, so I tried AES encryption using SecureVNCPlugin.DSM and AESV2Plugin.DSM without success.

SecureVNCPlugin.DSM causes "No matching security types" in the RealVNC iPad app. Tried all different cipher types in the plugin.

AESV2Plugin.DSM causes the VNC server to crash in Windows with message "VNC server for win32 stopped working and was closed".

Has anyone successfully used AES from an iPad VNC client to an UltraVNC server? If yes, what is your configuration? (which products, versions, settings are you using?)

Thanks!

The plugins need to be used by server and viewer.
Does the ipad viewer support encryption plugins ?

I am using the DSM plugin in the server side only.

The RealVNC app for iPad does not have any configuration screen for the encryption/security type, and the documentation is non-existing. This is all I could find in its Apple Store description:
* Connections encrypted using up to 256-bit AES technology.
* Authentication credentials protected by 2048-bit RSA public keys.

So apparently, RealVNC for iPad should be compatible with AES encryption.

Any ideas?

The encryption is no defined in the rfb protocol and depend on the vnc flavors.

If the ipad vncveiwer was made for realvnc it only will work with realvnc-pro encryption.

Darn... 10 bucks down the drain, though I can still use the RealVNC client on my iPhone and even an unencrypted connection should be fairly safe, right? I can't imagine anyone spying on a 3G connection...

My real concern would be using the VNC on iPad, unencrypted, on a public wifi.

Well, thanks Rudi for the help! I'll keep an eye to see if there's any other iPad app or VNC server that can do the trick...

You could always (a) pay for RealVNC server, or (b) look into some kind of VPN setup that would support both sides. (That would handle the encryption for you.)

iOS has native IPSec and PPTP VPN support, and it looks like OpenVPN is available too.

Yeah... I had thought about VPN but was lazy to research it better.

But since you mentioned it again... I'll take a look at this OpenVPN tonight.

I'll post my findins later.

Thanks, B.

Nope... iOS OOTB VPN is not compatible with OpenVPN.

Lots of people would like it to be... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... ID=1607496

Well... I kinda gave up on it for now.

The other alternative I was trying was setting up a PPTP VPN server on my Vista PC and would do the VNC through the VPN but I could not get the iPhone VPN client to successfully connect to my PC. It seems to work for others though.

Anyways, for anyone who ever wanna try the PPTP option, here are some helpful links:
