Question considering the website
Question considering the website
Hi
I wanted to ask why you don't update the website anymore. I think it would be important to have an up-to-date website so that the UltraVNC-community can grow faster. If it is because you (the admins) lack the time to manage the website, I can offer you my help if you want

PS: You could contact me over ICQ (have a look at my user profile to get the number).

But the forum site isn't, for most people, the obvious site to look at first. www.ultravnc.net should have the latest versions listed at the very least.RobH wrote:I think all of the information on Ultra VNC you could ever want is here now. You can get all the up to date info, programs, bugs, right here.
Actually, what we really need is an UltraVNC Wiki. That way we have (more or less) structured documentation which the user community can keep up to date.
Best of both worlds

Website need to be updated, but with plink and ssh it is always
a hell of a job to get even a html page updated
Need to check with Sam, but if you have some experience with websites and have some time to spare you have a go from me..
At least the forum and web site need to be better integrated,
and the web has no structure, a bunch of pages, but hard to get to a specific part.
Normal who should have a rel 1.00 around augustus, if an updated web would be available at the same time

Ok, Ok...
I've "created" the Web pages in about 2 hours 18 months ago and made very few modifs since then
You are right, the WebSite needs to be updated more often, at least once a week.
The original plan was to make a nice Web site as soon as V1.0.0 was released, which as you've probably noticed, is not yet the case...
Any help, suggestions and assistance for the web site, and possibly the new web site is welcome. We're open. None of us is actually a web designer...

My understanding of the Sourceforge docs is that you should be able to use FileZilla in sftp mode to upload ultravnc.sf.net's pages. A lot easier than using commandline tools, in my experience.Rudi De Vos wrote:Website need to be updated, but with plink and ssh it is always a hell of a job to get even a html page updated
Anyhow, it would be nice to have a one line banner at the top of the page pointing us in this direction for the latest updates.
I'm sorry that my HTML skills are pretty non-existent, otherwise I'd offer to help.

I agree that the web site should be redesigned a little and more often updated... but I don't see the need for a PHP-Database driven web site: not enought content, no need for dynamic page generation.
The download links for the latest stable version are quite visible.
IMHO, what we need to do is:
- Redisign of the main page. Less things, more clear, more obvious link to the real UltraVNC "Center": this forum
- Add a complete Online help/User manual, that can also be put on this forum
- Update the site more regulary: about once a week
- As soon as the v1.0.0 is out, register UltraVNC on major freeware/shareware download web sites. This will make the community really grow faster.
But I can be wrong
Any design skill and webmastering help is welcome.

Which Release??
So I take it RC11D is old and RC18 the version I should be downloading now? I visited the page and saw the links to 11D but the sourceforge page has RC18.
Just a suggestion. You may want to change the website just a bit to let new people know there is a more current version available at the sourceforge project page.
By the way.... excellent job on UltraVNC. I absolutely love it. It has come in handy administrating my home website.

Wiki-Suggestion

I would like to suggest to use an (temporal?) wiki for free
on an account on freezope.org
(free Zope-Sites with subdomain of freezope.org)
It's easy to have a very basic Wiki there by using a specific product.
Sorry, but i nearly do not have any practical experience...
Just a suggestion.
