1.0.9.1 (Stable)

Post by Rudi De Vos »

RC releases moved to stable.

Files are already on the new webserver, this will become active
after a few weeks more intensive testing of the update.

Current Release 1.0.9.1 is forum only.

Downloads

Please also check the new site...i hope all info is now more accessable.

CAD and win7

The local security policy of a computer must be configured to allow services and applications to simulate a SAS. To configure the policy, modify settings in the Group Policy Editor (GPE) Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in. The GPE settings that control delegation are in the following location:

Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Logon Options | Disable or enable software Secure Attention Sequence

On the home and premium version a reg change is needed, you don't have the policy editor.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"SoftwareSASGeneration"=dword:00000001

Reg change also work on pro version.

Will give this a go but have had an issue with all the RC releases where when running as a listener it hangs after a short while when it has a remote connection.

We start it from a batch file as follows

psexec.exe /accepteula -d -l vncviewer.exe -quickoption 3 -listen -dotcursor

(using psexec to ensure it runs in limited user mode for some extra security).

It is run out of a local folder with a different version also installed "normally". As far as I can see the local version (used for the receiver/listener) has no dependencies or interaction with the normally installed version.

Is this crash something that could be (or you planned to) address in this release?

vncviewer.exe crashes on first few connects, then it works
[topic=17917][/topic]

I saw this first in 1.0.8.2. I have now updated both client and server to 1.0.9.1 and the problem still occurs.

Basically upon first connect of vncviewer.exe to the server it will get through authentication and display an initial framebuffer of the desktop with a rectangular or square black area under the pointer. It sits there for a second of two then crashes.

Upon immediate second connect it goes through all the above, but the black area under the cursor is updated and the program works fine from that point.

If I wait a while for the second connect, then it goes back to initial crash behavior.

This only happens on LAN with 1ms latency. On remote connections with 90ms latency it doesn't happen at all.

It feels like a race condition. If I turn on auto scaling (or change connection options), I can usually avoid the initial crash.

This is very easily reproducable for me. I can provide additional info. Just let me know what you need. In the link above I included other examples of people seeing this problem so it isn't isolated to my setup.

This is the crash info that is provided:

Code: Select all

AppName: vncviewer.exe AppVer: 1.0.9.1 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.5755 Offset: 000108b2

I can't repeat it, but i guess the problem is related to the fast encoder switching ( auto setting) on startup.

Do you have auto mode or a fix encoder selected ?

It happens often when auto-mode is selected because that is what I have set as the default.

When I change the connection settings to something other than auto, it either never happens or doesn't happen often (I can't be sure it never happens, but I don't remember it happening)

Also when the connection is auto, after entering the password, the viewer receives the initial image of the desktop and underneath the cursor there is a black (ie no image) square/tile. A second or two later, either the viewer crashes or the black square/tile area gets filled in. In the latter case, everything works fine after the black square/tile area gets filled in.

When the connection is set to something else, like Ultra, then that black area underneath the cursor is never present (the initial framebuffer has the entire desktop with no black square/tile area underneath the cursor), so possibly that area of code is avoided.

Is there anything further I can provide to help narrow down the problem?

tested uvnc 1.0.9.1 both computers without mirror driver on same LAN 100Mbit/s wired, no dsmplugin, vnc authentication, direct connection.
vncviewer quick option=lan
only hook driver, I think is in use, but no easy way for check if really in use or not.

still only annoying mice flicking (flashing) without mirror driver with system hook on winvnc computer.
mice NOT flick (not flashing) with mirror driver on winvnc computer.

Mouse flashing is caused by the alpha blending capture mode...is this still needed in win7 ?

pc1 viewer, P4 without HyperThreading OS vista business sp1
pc2 winvnc, Core2 2.13GHz with hyperthreading OS win7 home premium

vncviewer show fast video rendering from disk of winvnc computer and smooth rendering aero.
see nearly realtime with frame rate at 13 fps video.mp4 size 352x288 troughput 766kbit/s
bug windows media player version 12 NOK (video is not sync refreshed only quarter lower part of video)
no problem with quicktime player version 7.6.8
no problem with divx plus player version 8.1.1

funny, that happen exactly opposite of what i was thinking.
with preemptive update, refresh video is slower
without preemptive update, refresh video is normal

missing/forget important feature for full screen or custom windows size.

* desktop scaling of vncviewer (DirectX or/and OpenGL)
* One-Port HTTP & VNC

Is the "update" (as opposed to "full") version supposed to allow you to upgrade a VNC server running as an app, or only as a service?

I have a couple of machines being updated remotely over a VNC connection. The ones with the vnc server running as a service updated properly using the "update" binary, but the one running it as an app (startup folder) ended up causing the vnc server to crash during the update process. After clearing the error dialog box on the remote machine (someone in front of that machine) tells me the install encountered an error replacing SecureVNCPlugin (or one of the secure connection libraries) with an option to abort or retry. VNC server has crashed at this point, so there is no way for the dialog to be acknowledged remotely.

Perhpas they crash in both cases, just in the "service" case it gets restarted automatically so all I need to do is reconnect.

I was fortunate that someone was around to let me know why the VNC server was no longer responding, but I could imagine this might be an unwelcome surprise to someone remotely doing the update and not having access to the machine. I figure if it is supposed to work then hopefully it could be fixed, but if it isn't supposed to work, there could be a warning either on the download page or during the install.

This is an update from 1.0.8.2 to 1.0.9.1 on winxp.

I will verify the update script....

Seems the service was restarted, but not the application.

2 problems as application
1) dsm plugin is in use, can't be overwritten: added replace on reboot
2) Added Start application after install ( extra option)

Update will be for 1.09.2

In case it helps, I duplicated the problem and recorded more info:

After going through the update prompts, the install starts extracting files. Then it starts installing files. Once it reaches securevncplugin.dsm, winvnc.exe crashes and puts up the "winvnc.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" prompt. If you click on details, it indicates the problem is with securevncplugin.dsm.

When you close the prompt, the one behind it says:

[path]\SecureVNCPlugin.dsm

An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file:
DeleteFile failed; Code 5.
Access is denied.

[Abort][Retry][Ignore]

If you click on Retry (must be done locally as winvnc.exe is dead so no remote connections) then the install is successful and eventually asks you to reboot.

Server does not crash, but get closed by the installer.
Only, killing the server keeps the dsm plugin active, and can't be overwritten. replce on reboot solve the dsm issue.

tested with updater 1.0.9.2, seems to work.

Sorry for wrong terminology (close/kill vs crash)

Will test/confirm 1.0.9.2 updater when it becomes available.

Thanks.

Minor UI bug.

For the 1.0.9.1 client, the IP address area in the upper right of the window (under the title bar, to the left of the upload/download graphical bars) seems to be off by one pixel in its placement. It appears to be 1 pixel to high. If you look at the very thin darker edge line right under the title bar and follow it from left to right, just around the IP address area, the UI element containing the IP address overwrites the edge line.

Not sure if it has been this way in previous versions or not.
