Not sure what you're asking. I have my repeater at a URL that is based upon using NO-IP... so setting up a repeater that is consistently on line at a known address works quite well

However, maybe tha's not what you're asking

Hello Jon,

Yes that's exactly what I'm looking for.

How is that done with no-ip in a nutshell? Or perhaps slightly more explanatory than in a nutshell :)

Is there no way to have it run online on my own domain somehow via cpanel?

Thanks,

Hubbard

1. Go to no-ip.com and sign up for free or for a small charge if you don't like the choice of free domain names. I should point out that no-ip.com is not the only choice for the supplier of this type of service.

2. setup an appropriate domain name (with no-ip)

3. install a repeater on either a windows box or a linux box

4. On your router, forward the appropriate ports to your repeater box.

5. make sure to install a module from no-ip that keeps no-ip informed if your repeater box does not have a static ip address (I'm assuming that's your situation?) I don't do this since I use a router that will handle that for me (the router allows you to indicate that you want to update the no-ip service). Any of the methods, then, keep the mapping of the domain you selected mapped to your repeater's actual IP address.

6. setup ChunkVNC to use your no-ip domain name. make sure the ports match the router forwarding and the repeater software.

7. I think that's it. If I missed something someone will certainly drop by and comment. I'm a relatively low usage individual... typically one support session every day or so but I have to say that this setup has worked without any issues for about 5 months.

Hey Jon,

Thanks very much. I'm sure this solution will work just fine.

But.. I'd still like to know if there's any way to install a repeater via my current hosting solution (uses cpanel). I noticed there was a perl script available somehow but I'm not sure how to use it or if I can use it.

I'd like to have my repeater located at: repeater.mydomain.com

& have it running online somehow but I'm not sure if this is possible.

Of course Jon, your solution does the trick if I keep the repeater computer running/connected at all times...

Thanks!

Hubbard,

I guess it depends whether or not you have control of your host computer... typically most that I have dealt with wouldn't let you do that. Your mileage may vary :-)

Hi, I think this is my issue. Could you clarify this statement. What are the settings named on the router that allow you to do this?? I used Virtual Servers for the port forwarding and maybe that is where I need to make the adjustment somehow?

Paul,

You have 2 choices:
1. Install the application from no-ip on your
computer. It will run and keep the address updated

2. Use a router that supports no-ip (and other similar sites).
I took one of my routers and installed the rom update
from dd-wrt so that the router would do that ip updating
independent of the computer. I don't have the router
here so I can't tell you where the option is located but
it was simple to find.

Thanks for the reply. Since I need the ChunkVNC repeater to run with the computer on I took the easy short term solution and downloaded the NO-IP update client as you suggested. Just in case someone is looking for this it is found at https://www.no-ip.com/downloads.php?page=win
