"Network error: Could not connect to server: XX.XX.XX.spam:5900"
My post relates to an error (post#13) in this earlier thread, but there doesn't seem to be a clear solution in the forums. Java reports I am using Using JRE version 1.5.0_08 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM.

A. I have now been a VNC user for 6 months (still a newbie!) and use it on a regular basis, with DSM and a repeater. I have ports forwarded in both my router and firewall. What I would like to do is this:
1. Simple Java Access for testing. Access my PC using the Javaviewer but not through the repeater. I understand this is possible without the DSM plugin (unchecked), and with the repeater (proxy) boxes unchecked in the VNC server setup screen. I cannot however get this to work even when I turn OFF my windows firewall. Java loads up, then I always get this blank white screen.
btw, as asked by others in that thread above why is it trying to connect to port 5900 when I point it to 5800? [EDIT]Post 32 [topic=5354][/topic] of this thread explains why.
B. How do I go about doing these next steps in simple terms?
2. More Advanced Access using a SSL (which I understand offers security similar to the DSM plugin). I am not sure exactly what to do on the oft-referred-to page http://sc.uvnc.com/javaviewer/index.html?
3. More Advanced Access using a Repeater.
4. More Advanced Access using a Repeater and SSL.
I'd be very very grateful for some hand-holding here, if someone is kind enough to guide me in the right direction. I'm willing to try all (polite) suggestions at this stage ...

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but it "sounds" like because I only forward 900-> 5900 and not 5900->5900, Javaviewer gets confused? i.e. I call up Javaviewer on http://<myip>:800 which goes to my pc at 5800, which then calls back for 5900, but 5900 is not forwarded to 5900, only 900->5900.I was having this problem and what I did to solve it was to make sure that the matching 5900 port was forwarded in the firewall as well. For example, its not enough to just forward 5800 for web access, you need to forward 5900 too. It looks to me that what happens is that basically port 5800 just downloads the java viewer, which then tries to reconnect to the server at port 5900. So both ports need to be open. This confused me for a while, because i didn't have 5900 open (since i just want the web access).
If this is TRUE, unless I go back to all the stock forwarding port no.s how do I get Javaviewer to "call back" on 900 rather than 5900. What do I have to edit?
[EDIT2]This appears to be TRUE! For now I let 5900->5900 in my firewall and I can use javaviewer, without DSM of course. Next step is via the repeater and with SSL. Thanks for your help!
