Information about UltraVNC.

Post by JesseG »

My company is a non-profit organization with ~300 PCs and Laptops, and my task is to provide technical support for these machines. Not only do I have to walk a lot, but a lot of staff work on the road.

I have done some research into remote access applications. I tried free applications such as RealVNC, TightVNC, and UltraVNC. I also tried commercial applications of RealVNC Enterprise, TridiaVNC, and TridiaVNC. From those applications I have come to like UltraNVC the most. While commercial applications have more features and are faster and more stable, the price to install the server in one host is a lot of money for what I have to do. Not only that, but I have to install the application on the computer and sometimes even run it as a service.

I'll try and get to the point already. What I have done while testing UltraVNC is download the binaries zip and place the server portion, a registry file with the settings, and a batch file that runs the registry file and the server program in a shared folder in the network (with read only rights). I made a shortcut to the batch file and placed it a commonly used shared folder. When staff need assistance, I tell them to double click on the shortcut and tell me the IP address. This way the service or application is not running all the time, only on demand. I can only do this with TightVNC and UltraVNC.

Here is my problem, I like UltraVNC much more than TightVNC, because of it's functionallity, and I don't want to spend a lot of money getting a commercial application. However TightVNC is reviewed more by reputable websites such as CNet, PCMag, etc. I want to use UltraVNC, but I'm unable to until I provide sufficient information that UltraVNC is not a big security risk(prove that it doesn't contain a trojan or something), and give references to popular IT websites that review the application.

I have looked extensively, and I can't find anything that will support my case to deploy UltraVNC. Will it be possible for you guys to give me any links, or maybe have someone in CNet review it? I'm also waiting until the UltraVNC.com website is ready, so on the mean time I'll be doing more reasearch about UltraVNC. Thanks.

Yeah, I tried it already, and it's even better than the way I used regular UltraVNC. But the problem still consists of convincing my IS manager to implement UltraVNC SC. The only way that I can think of is by uploading it to download.com and have them check it and review it. The main concern for the IS manager is that the program may contain a trojan, open ports other than those that it advertises, or do damage to the operating system, files and/or applications. As much information I can get from other IT professionals about UltraVNC, organizations such as mine need to see it endorsed by popular IT websites. Who would I need to talk about having UltraVNC and SC uploaded to download.com?

Audit

The code is available on the site...

If your manager is concerned about it, have that person download the code and audit it.

From there the manager will be able to tell exactly what is going on with the software, how it works and why...

Hope that this helps.

not to mention if they have questions you can ask them here and a fairly diversly active forum is usually always willing to help.

But just remember some of the issues that are being seen with the W2K3 servers, I have no idea how many you have but it seems to be an important factor for some people. And its not good going in with good intensions be approved and the important aspect of the project (W2K3 servers) dont work properly.
