alternative to blank screen

Post by mathog »

The client can disable the server's display and input
devices. That's good, but if an end user walks
into the lab and sees the computer in that state he/she
will almost certainly hit the reset button after a few
minutes of trying to figure out why the display won't
light but the case lights are on.

In an earlier thread in another forum it was mentioned that
hardware accelerated OpenGL windows are not transferred
to the client. Any chance this could be used to advantage
here to put up a floating "This machine is being serviced,
please do not reset it"? That would go "over" the actual window and cover the whole screen. So all
maintenance operations would be hidden. Yet
the potential user of the server machine
would be able to see that the machine is actually in use and
so hopefuly wouldn't reset it.

The only other way that I can think of to do this is by sound,
and that only works if the server has speakers. Plus it
might be just a little annoying to anybody near the machine
to hear it proclaiming "Do not reset, I am being serviced" over
and over again.

Just a thought.

Regards,
