First of all, I suggest you to upgrade to a more recent version.
The connection problems may have to do with the windows xp firewall. To disable it, select "Network Connections" in your Control Panel, right-click on your internet connection, select properties and disable the "Internet Connection Firewall" which you find on the "advanced"-tab. If you have installed the BETA-version of the second service pack the firewall works different, but I haven't tested it.

If this doesn't help, I need a little more details. What does UltraVNC say exactely? Does it give you a connection error immediately after you click connect, or does it take a few seconds before the error appears?

Thanx for the heads up on XP firewall. I will look at that immediately.
The dialog box reads "failed to connect to server." It takes some several seconds to arrive at that point and gives one the sense that it was properly trying.

You can also configure the XP-firewall to have some inbound connections.

That would be my next problem. I dropped the firewall yesterday and already someone is dumping trash on my unit. How can I find out how to program an open port for VNC?

I don't think they have an option to select what port the XP firewall can allow. I think it's needs to be down, then run like Zone Alarm or something that allows you to configure ports.

Firewall XP

It is possible to open ports in the XP Firewall... You can add and remove services (ports) that internet users can access.

Check it out...

Can you tell us where you do that? May be real important when SP2 for XP comes out. Firewall will be on by default. :|
Thanks

Firewall

Rob,

View properties of the LANconnection with the firewall enabled. Click "advanced"-tab. In the lowerright corner you will find a button "configuration" (I have a Dutch windows version, so maybe the button has another name). There you can change what incoming ports can be opened.

This is tested with Windows XP Pro

Greets,
