Connecting to Pc thats not logged-in (Problems)!
Connecting to Pc thats not logged-in (Problems)!
Im using Ultr@Vnc on a Pc locked away at a semi-remote location. However i cannot log-in to it via VNC until its fully logged-in.
However once ive manually logged into the remote PC using its own keyboard/ mouse, i can then return to my main PC and connect to this remote one via Ultr@vnc.
Ive installed VNC as a system service so cant work out whats wrong.
I previously used Real VNC and had no problems, i simply turned on the remote pc when needed and connected to it straight away via the main PC, i then simply used the VNC connection to log the remote PC into its windows.
Any help would be appreciated on this!

some more info would be helpful?
What OS?
Using FUS? (fast user Switching? for XP)
What version of UltraVNC?
Were you using a previous version and recently upgraded?
Were you using a different type of VNC and recently upgraded?
of course you used the little too unregister and register the service again and rebooted the computer right? Just a question.

IpSec,
Im using XP Pro, with fast user switching turned off as it wasnt working with it on either.
Previously i was using 'Real VNC' the software Ultra was based upon. That worked fine but doesnt allow file transfer.
I have uninstalled that and now use Ultra but have the problems previously mentioned. However these did not occur when i used 'Real VNC'.
I have unistalled and re-installed Ultra to make sure and tried with fast switching turned on and off. But still no luck. It would appear to my limited knowledge that the Listener client/ server on my remote pc is not running until windows is logged in.
Ultra is installed as a system service however.

I forgot to mention.
When i try connecting to the remote pc before windows is logged in, i am able my VNC is able to detect the remote pc but on entering the password the status/ data transfer box indicates that the password is rejected.
However this same password is accepted once ive manually clicked the user icon (log on) for windows on the remote pc.
Does this still indicate that the service isnt running on the remote pc at this point. And that my vnc is simply finding a pc on the remote ip rather than an active VNC client?

Try the Password you had for the REAL VNC which you had previously installed. (One thing is the registry entries do stick and sometimes it keeps the old viewers password) Hopefully these are different.dancetraxx wrote:I forgot to mention.

What version of UltraVNC are you using? RC18, RC11d, one of the test versions? I am assuming RC18 or higher for file sharing.
Since you are getting the "Enter Password" Dialogue box that means you have the service running... It just may not be using the right password. If you are using RC18 there is a DEFAULT user setting and a User setting that can be different passwords.
Or you can do the easy idea of - uninstalling VNC - using one of the many freeware Registry cleaning programs after reboot, then reinstall, and ensure you set the default settings for the computer under the admin account or whatever account for your box.
Hope this helps you going forward.
You dont get the error that says there is no password set up on the machine, just that you entered in the wrong password right?
Try the Caps lock on, just once to see if when you typed in the pw it was on?
Im sort of grabbing here because you are connecting but the pw doesnt seem to be correct.
Thats why I think best option would be uninstall, run registry cleaner remove all VNC / ORL reg folders and then reinstall and just set it up like you did before.
I always like starting off fresh if im not upgrading.

Same problem slightly different setup
Hi,
I am having the same problem connecting to aserver running RC18 with no DSM installed. The server is running win2003. The interesting part is that the server is a blade. I have 2 of them that are essentially identical except for IP addresses etc... One I can log into no problem through VNC. The other I need to physically log into the server from its keyboard before anything works. I have uninstalled and reinstalled VNC. The pw works once I am logged into the server, but otherwise I get a message that the authentication failed. Anyone have any more suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Chris

Re: Same problem slightly different setup
if you search the forums there are a lot of people using w2k3 and having issues with ultravnc. Due to w2k3 not assigning 0 display to console. They are looking into it but there are a few registry setts if you search for and this may help.cmitts wrote:Hi,

After download several supposedly free registry cleaners, i noticed the odd link to something possibly VNC related being found.
However nothing significant was removed by any of these tools. So i ran regedit from the command line. Then highlighted each of the various parent folders within regedit and did a find/search for VNC.
Each parent folder contained at least one sub folder holding something relating to VNC. So i simply deleted the whole VNC subfolder, then moved onto the next parent Folder and did a search again for VNC until all folders had been searched.
Then i rebooted and re-installed UltraVNC, and hey presto it works perfectly.
Of course i should warn you its not a good idea to delete wholesale folders from the registry from the backup. However as im only human i of course didnt do this and havent had any problems.
Thanks for the help from everyone!

Thank you everyone
Thank you everybody for your input on the problem. Special thanks to Sergio for pointing to the post regarding the password stickiness issue. Then taking IPsec's advice I ended up uninstalling VNC, then doing a complete registry cleaning manually, using the find and find next feature. I deleted everything that related to the search term VNC. Unlike Dancetrax I did a registry backup before I began . I then reinstalled and all is working well now.
Thanks again for all the help.
