Setup with DSL no router.

Post by tarkwolf »

I am setting up Ultra VNC 1.0 RC 18

Running Win XP SP2
windows FireWall off ( no others installed)
No Router
DSL directly connected to Ethernet card
VNC server running in system tray with IP : 192.168.1.XX
password was changed, all appears normal.

Can not connect, any suggestions?

thanks

The ip address is a private network address. Your modem is your router.

What you need to do is find out what model your modem/router is and then possibly figure out how to forward the port you wish to use. Defaults are 5900 for viewer application and 5800 for the web viewer.

go to
www.whatismyip.com
that is the ip address your friend or someone that will connect uses to connect to your server with the port of 5900 or 5800.

e.g. Viewer 10.10.10.10 (that works because the viewer uses the default port unless otherwise specified)
e.g. Web viewer http://10.10.10.10:5800 (Note the :5800 that is how you tell the web viewer to specify the port of 5800)

When you get that working, look into the Security Module for VNC. This will encrypt the password and your traffic to and from the Server / Viewer. This of course is only a suggestion..

Have fun :-)

I have a Westell Model 2200 DSL Modem, Not sure how to open a port. It must be blocking the port 5900, I do not know how to access the modem to allow it to open ports.

I have the correct ip to use. So this is where Im stuck.

www.portforward.com/westell/2200.htm

tells you how to do port forwarding and port triggering. Port forwarding - always forwarded to the destination Triggering must be initiated on the inside going out and that will stay active until the router deems it not being used. I would stick with forwarding for the moment.
