Hi, I am a beginner. I live in Michigan, my dad in Florida. I want to be able to re-configure and/or show him how to do something on his pc via remote control. We are both using different ISP's via a cable internet connection. We also both have the same model Linksys routers due to more than 1 pc in each home. Will VNC work and if so, is there documentation explaining the setup of the pc's and routers? Any info would be so helpful.
thanks in advance.

Beginner, will this work?
Re: Beginner, will this work?
In short yes VNC will work for you, however if you are just giving him support Single Click also will work for you.refman721 wrote:Hi, I am a beginner. I live in Michigan, my dad in Florida. Short description - UltraVNC - Has server and viewer application. Must be installed on local computer and remote computer (however you want to look at that). The SERVER (the computer being connected to) Must have the port you specify in that application Forwarded by his router the the destination computer. There is a repeater for multiple computers but lets take this one step at a time. Please look at the documentation people have put together under -
http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/faq.htm
under Ultr@VNC Server Installation Documentation
and Ultr@VNC Viewer Installation Documentation
This is good for usually computers you have physical access to.
Now on to Single Click. This expands upon UltraVNC and only requires the VIEWER (Person helping) side to have anything installed.
Check it out at
http://ultravnc.com/
It tells you what it is, how to create something and better yet you can custom create a logo ect if you felt like it. This option doesnt require the remote user to foward ports it requires YOU to foward ports to your computer. This may be an option after you get VNC working or you can jump right in and do it this way. You can only connect to the remote computer after they have initiated the request.
Some other good info. When having issues come here post your info - e.g. OS of computer, SP2 or SP1 Firewall settings if XP, Firewalls if any, and of course your router specs if you need help finding some info on how to port forward or go to http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm they have a ton of routers and yours should be one of them.. hopefully.
Also try to be as detailed as you can when posting.. This way we can try to help you out with our experiences we have, no sense in re-inventing the wheel
And... take breaks if you need them.. sometimes things are frustrating when you are learning them.. of course this is only a suggestion too.
Yes, this was a short description of both tools..
After you get them working or while your trying to .. your call you can secure your connection with a Security Module... You can search the forum for that info or go to - http://home.comcast.net/%7Emsrc4plugin/
Good luck and have fun
