Windows 7 from XP

Post by oscar6263 »

I have been using UltraVNC SC for remote support for the past few years. I, like many have had problems supporting Windows 7 machines from my XP Machine.

I ran across ChuckVNC the other day and decided to give it a try. I love the simplicity, as well as your website. However, I have been unable to get it working properly. Specifically, I initially get a black screen. After 15 to 60 seconds I get a screen update. After that, I am unable to control the remote pc or see any actions by the remote user.

Note: I am able to successfully control the remote Windows 7 machine using the standard UltraVNC Server and Viewer.

Interesting, I've never done it this way but I know of others that haven't had this problems with this type of setup.

Can you give me a bit more info on what versions of Windows you have 32bit 64bit?

Have you had success controlling other computers?

Is your repeater hosted on the same network as the viewer or somewhere else?

Have you tried one of the ready-to-run versions?

Thanks for your reply. I am working from a 32bit xp computer and connecting to a 64 bit Windows 7 computer. Same physical network, same domain. I am hosting the repeater on the same computer I am using as a viewer. I can control other 32bit xp computers on the same network without any problems. I have not tried any ready-to-run version.

Thanks for your help.

When running InstantSupport on the 64bit 7 machine choose install service from the tray icon. Let me know if the performance is better.

Tried it with no effect, but I'll give it a try again and let you know if the result is the same.

Something weird is going on. I tried it again and it somehow took down my router. I had to power down the router. The router is a Linksys wrt54g with DD-WRT software. I don't know why it would blast the router, but it has done this before when I tried to connect. Both machines connect to the router wirelessly. Very weird.

Sounds like you might be having other problems.... :(
Can anyone else confirm a working XP Viewer to 7 64bit InstantSupport?

I'll replace the router with a switch and test again shortly...

Installed Windows 7 Home 64bit on my rig this morning and had no problems running InstantSupport on it while using Windows XP 32bit for ChunkViewer.

I've used my XP to control both 32b and 64b Win 7 with no issues.

Must be related to oscar's previous networking issues.
