Wrong default directory used (always c:\program files\ultavn

Post by netwolf »

I know it's only a minor issue, but i still wanted to report it.
On my system, a german XP is installed, so there is no path like "C:\program files..." at all, but C:\Programme\..." instead.

The UltraVNC realised that and therefore suggests "C:\Programme\UltraVNC" as install dir, however the DSM plugin settings don't and therefore use "c:\program files..." everywhere.

As I said, no bid deal, but still a minor annoyance :)

That's right and annoying

Hi there!

I've experienced another but similar issue with the DSM plugin. My UltraVNC server (19.5) always and only searches in directory c:\programme for the key. As it it not possible to restrict user's access to this dir completely this is IMHO not a minor issue but a complete security risc!

I would be glad if the plugin could work like the manual states it does actually:

"If you have a non-English version of Windows, where is "Program Files"? To find "Program Files" the plugin looks at the environment variable setup by Windows called %programfiles%. It uses the value of that variable, and then adds \UltraVnc on the end. Works everywhere!"

That would be nice but definetely the DSM plugin is currently not working like that at the moment.

It DOES work that way...

Starting with version 1.1.4, it DOES work that way.

A few key points:

There are 2 versions of the plugin.

One uses the registry exclusively. If you have already used the plugin before 1.1.4, there are entries in the registry that probably point to "C:\Program Files\UltraVNC". If you delete the registry keys, it will load then with the correct path. You can change the path to ANYTHING YOU LIKE.

The second version (noreg) looks in multiple places including %programfiles%\ultravnc. If that's a security risk for you, don't use this version. OR, define the environment variable that will point to a different path. It checks the variable first.

Read the website. There is LOTS of up-to-date information there.
