Re: ETA on 4.0

I ran into problems with networking while running the script as a service. I've been fighting with that for the last couple weeks. :|

I just found out why I was having problems and have since fixed the issue, release is imminent but I will be leaving for a week vacation tomorrow.

If everything keeps rolling as planned a beta will be ready early next month.

Hope you have a great vacation!

In the meantime, do you care to "bless" Rat's fork?

B,

I've briefly looked over Rat's code and what he has done looks good but I haven't spent time properly testing it as that would take time away from 4.0 (although I've borrowed some of his code to fix the deletion issue :D you will get props in the release notes Rat!)

I really like the fact that there are already 2 forks of ChunkVNC as it gives me more insight to what people want and this is exactly why I released the project open source.
Not only can I make a better product for you and your customers, you can make a better product for me and mine.

The new release date is "when it's done" :P

My business has been very consuming lately but I've been getting coding done on the weekends, like right now!

I work on it whenever I can, at this point in time I'm still hoping to get a release out this month but I've been stuck a few times already on certain code issues.

I promise it will be well worth the wait. :D

I understand the "when it's done" attitude and I agree with it.

But (maybe just because I'm impatient to test the new version), I hope you will release it soon, even if some features you'd like to add are still missing, even if it's not yet perfect and needs a bit of beta-testing, so we could benefit from all the bugfixes and improvements you guys have already done.

I think that it would keep the project 'more alive' and hopefully encourage some people here to bring their input for the next versions (4.1, 4.5 or 5.0).

I know you are still actively working on ChunkVNC but, as SCPrompt development seems to have slowed down if not stopped (at least for now), it's the only remaining open source project that could go where others didn't (if more people join the effort) and become a real alternative to proprietary softwares. That's exactly what I would like Chunk to be... and I guess I'm not the only one.

I had to write this because when searching for "when it's done" on Google, the first result was : 'Duke Nukem Forever'. Kind of scary, isn't it (for those who know the saga) ?

But be sure I'll wait, whatever time you need to get it done.

Zyxyx,

I understand your point that releasing something now would keep the community active but at this point in time I'd rather continue coding 4.0 to where I want it than answer questions on a half baked release.

ChunkVNC 3.1 is still a solid product, I use it in my business every day and haven't had any major issues and I hope others have experienced the same.

The SVN has my most current work and anyone can download and look over it. I don't encourage this because the code would require many changes to just work at all on a different network.

You hit the nail on the head with the Duke reference, the difference here is if I disappear my work is in the SVN. I assure you though, this community has me hooked and I don't see any change in that for a long time.

And that's the key - you <b>can</b> get all the bug fixes and improvements if you really want, since I gather supercoe is committing all his changes to the SVN as he makes them. But the time it would take him to package up these interim changes in a user-friendly form would <b>slow down and detract</b> from the goal of shipping a useful, cooked upgrade...

Are you going to use the latest version of AutoIt (3.3.6.0) or you sticking with the 3.3.4.0, because there was quite a few bug fixes.

I've been loving ChunkVNC lately but haven't been following the forum because of time considerations. Finally got over here to get caught up and it looks like there's lots of cool stuff in the pipeline.
Tons of thanks to supercoe and it looks like there's some props to be sent out to rat and a couple others as well.

I can't wait to see what's different in 4.0!

ich,

Awesome, I always like success stories. :D

My business is taking off like wild fire which has slowed down development but some other devs have expressed interest in helping. A lot of new stuff is either done or in the pipeline.

SC - glad to hear you're busy. I'm trying to get things lined up in my own business so I can hire a tech and actually be able to manage them. I guess if you're providing quality service it overrides "the economy" everyone seems to be bitching about.

ChunkVNC has really helped us out a lot.

@ supercoe - OK, I've been digging around here looking at some of the stuff intended/talked about for v4 and I'm impatient now. Just how much beer is it going to take to tear you away from Bad Company 2?

I've been scrounging for stuff to ebay to get funds for the new Scala Rider G4 from Cardo, but once some funds come in I'll delay my new toy and send some motivation your way. Actually, I still haven't sent any gratitude to the main UVNC team in quite a while... *sigh* I guess I'll just have to wait for A2DP.

ich,

I don't see any problems with the economy when it comes to what I do. Like you said, when you provide a quality service people need you. When you sell crappy "northern Minnesota" gift shop crap like people do around here I'd imagine business would be terrible. I think people are just finially realizing that they don't need to waste so much money on useless junk, service businesses will always be in demand (especially in computers!) when you're good at what you do.

I think beer would make me want to play BC2, I haven't even had time to do that much lately. Everything is finally settling down from our week vacation last month. We had a lot of customers that had to bring in their computers after bringing them to the competition when we were gone. Needless to say this did a lot for our reputation.

The Scala Rider G4 looks like a nice unit, I really liked my ChatterBox when I used to ride.

It appears this project has come to a hault or a serious slow crawl.

This has been a great project. I wish I had the time or skill to take it over.

Thanks for what has been provided to date.

It hasn't, just because no stable version has been released, doesn't mean the project has ceased. Look at the the activity of the sub-forum is a clue to the continuing release of version 4.0 :)
I wish I had the time or skill to take it over.
The code is created with AutoIt, simple to learn the basics!

The project hasn't ceased but development has slowed. :(
I've only had time lately to answer questions on the forum as my business has been keeping me from coding.

Life is starting to settle down and soon I'll be devoting much more time to development of this project.

ChunkVNC is an integral part of my business so I'll always be working on it!

Glad to read that the development has not ceased.

Glad to see that you are still answering all the questions asked in the forum.

I have one more... :P

Would it be possible - as nfhm2k suggests in the 'Issues' section of ChunkVNC Google project hosting (14 @ http://code.google.com/p/chunkvnc/issues/list) - to update the SVN with the many changes there seems to be so far from the 3.1 release.

Right now, the last updates / revisions to the SVN were done on 14 March 2010.

As B pointed out to me...
B wrote:And that's the key - you <b>can</b> get all the bug fixes and improvements if you really want, since I gather supercoe is committing all his changes to the SVN as he makes them.
... that would help those wanting to improve the existing code and could maybe decrease the number of questions you face regarding some feature requests or improvements or modifications you already did.

I know you don't have much time but you could possibly spare some if others can complete some of the remaining steps to the anticipated fourth version.

What do you think ?

Zyxyx,

I wish it were that easy, I've been approached by a few people willing to help with the code but it seems to boil down to disagreeing on something or having separate visions for the project.

I feel bad that I haven't been able to spend time on 4.0 in the last month. Trust me, development will continue....

It really seems to work out best when I make a release, wait for others to tweak it to their liking and hope they share their code so I can see it. This way I don't have to discuss anything with other developers, I just pick what I think is best.

Maybe that's not the best way to do it, I just like to do it that way.

As far as 3.1, really the only "patch" that I think needs to be done is for the file deletion issue. Otherwise I think it's a stable product that seems to work fine for me every day.

The problem boils down to time, I obviously have been low on that lately for coding but I find enough to continue supporting people here. ;)

4.0 is building up to be substantially different than 3.1 but some of the code is similar. I feel that developers can learn from what I've done already by looking at the 4.0 codebase if they feel like modding 3.1
