Operating instructions

Post by kjhansen »

I need this software to monitor what the other computers in my wireless home network (LinkSys) are doing and allow me to work on them, as needed, remotely. They are all three Vista computers. I've downloaded the program and installed it twice. First: Installation instructions on the website are not accurate, so I'm following the screen prompts and hoping. Second: Once the software is installed and I click on the icon and get the connect window. I select Auto and connect and it fails to connect to the server. Well there is no server. My computer is the primary computer but not a server. Now what?

I'm afraid you have a lot of reading (and understanding) to do.

In the context of VNC, usually people refer to the "server" as the computer BEING controlled remotely. It would run the WinVNC executable. ("Server" is largely an arbitrary term; we're not necessarily talking about a network file server or a web server, but merely a computer that "serves" some kind of data or function to another computer.)

Often the computer DOING the remote control is called the "viewer" or the "client".

If you wish to control these machines from outside your network, in your case you have more than one computer (server) you would like to control remotely, so you would probably want to have the VNC server software running on different "ports" on each of those machines, and then configure your Linksys router to forward those different ports to the LOCAL IP address of each of those machines. You'd then select the particular port (with the ::portnumber option after the DNS name or IP address of your home network's Internet connection) for the machine you wanted to control. I would suggest using a strong password, particularly if you use the default VNC ports.

If you're just controlling them WITHIN your network, you can leave everything at its default and simply connect by your machine's host names or local IP address.

(I'm not sure what you mean by "I select Auto" -- at what point did you tell the viewer what machine you were trying to connect to? By the way, standard VNC is point to point -- you're connecting directly from one PC to the other. There are other ways.)

As I said, I think you'll need to read and understand a bit more about networking to proceed further. There are FAQ and Newbie sections in the forum here. Good luck.
