Repeater Problem

Post by Rat »

Can anyone confirm that this UVNC Repeater bug has still not been fixed? (and therefore causing ChunkVNC problems)

[topic=10676][/topic]

In particular look at the following post by Redge:
Posted: 2009-12-12 11:38 Post subject: Re: the session hangs on 'Negotiate Protocol Version'

My take on it from reading the above thread is that if the Server connects first to the Repeater before the Viewer, then the Repeater can sometimes hang for its 5min timeout period.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this happening already in my testing... Unexplained connection failures that go away after a while without any configuration changes.

I had this problem when I was running the repeater as an application and it would hang because the repeater had "crashed". Could probably have something to do with the fact I ran it from a TS Session. Either way, I have been running the repeater in service mode and so far all is happy (well I am anyway).

EDIT: I haven't read the whole thread you referred to so this may be completely irrelevant in which case, I apologise.

Rat,

Good find, I to have random repeater crashes/non connects and haven't been able to get to the bottom of what causes it.

Not much we can do about it at this point in time, we'll just have to wait for the UltraVNC 2.0 rewrite. ;)

In addition to scripting a restart of the repeater service, one could also go all belt-and-suspenders and have two repeater instances on different ports, with corresponding dual installations of the server?

Not sure if this would work with Chunk as-is (I think you only create a single-named temp file directory when InstantSupport unpacks), but if I really wanted to ensure connectivity...

B,

Thats pretty excessive :P
Install the repeater as a service, set the service to restart if there is a crash, the autoreconnect feature of InstantSupport will take care of the rest.

Don't know if this is any use to you guys but I thought I'd mention it. I'm testing vncrepeater on an openwrt router and tried to replicate this last night but couldn't, so maybe the problem isn't in the linux fork. I watched the repeater via a console and could see the server connecting and disconnecting sort of randomly but roughly every 60 to 90 seconds. I tried connecting the viewer straight after the server disconnected to see if that tripped it up but as soon as the server reconnected the viewer connected. I tried a lot of times and it went through every time no matter what connection state the server was in.

Just an FYI, we use this for our remote support system and also use the Linux flavor of repeater on a CentOS VPS box and have never had a problem with crashes. We do have it installed as a service on linux so who knows if it's just restarting at sight of a problem.

webtron,

The UltraVNC server has a timeout for autoreconnect, when a viewer isn't connected for a certain period of time it will disconnect and reconnect to the repeater.

Not quite sure why it needs to do this but it's something the UltraVNC devs would have to shed some light on.
