The all-inclusive and all-elusive SC setup tutorial

Post by Zathrak »

I have seen dozens of posts and even more links claiming to be *the* SC setup tutorial of them all. Every one of the ones that I have seen have been false. I was reading through Rudi's post and was getting overwhelmed. I'm 1 day old to UltraVNC and am assuming that SC is what I'm most looking to accomplish, however I'm having major difficulties finding anything online or on this forum that are not cryptic or require sifting through 50 pages worth of banterous forum posts.

Is there an actual step by step tutorial for all the noobs out there who wish to use the software but don't know where to start...or finish for that matter? I'd gladly offer to make one except I still have no clue what I'm doing...

I'm in the same boat... All I am looking for is a plain (English), simple, straight-forward installation guide for VNC Single Click, i.e., just how to use it 'out-of-the-box'...no fancy customize stuff... I'll worry about that later... I just want to see it work!

I downloaded winvnc_SCII_100.exe, winvnc_SCII_RC23.exe, and winvnc_SCIII.exe - all have the property file description: VNC server for Win32

I am on my 'local network' (192.168.xxx.xxx). I can load winvnc.exe (UltraVNC Server) on workstation (A) and run vncviewer.exe (UltraVNC Viewer) on workstation (B) and everything works as it should.

I load the VNC Single Click server(s) on workstation (B) and I get 'WinVNC - listening' on the taskbar. All give my viewer the error: 'Failed to connect to server !'

So what did I miss? Can someone give me help?? Even just a hint???

It's definately a pain in the arse. Having just gone through it again, and found all the links that will lead you astray, I'm happy to help you out if you want. If you are in a hurry, we can use SC and work together on your PC, if not in a hurry, we can talk through posts in this topic.

Did you portforward 5500 in your router?

To th3tech: I was testing on my Local Intranet... inside the router so portforwarding was not an issue... thanks anyway.

To JasGot: Thank you for the reply and offer...

Ok... I got it now...
Yes, I made some assumptions I should not have... :|

Here is what I learned, hope it may help others new to this game...

Scenario:

Computer A is the 'helpdesk'.
Computer B is the client.

1.) Unlike UltraVNC server SC does not allow 'direct' viewer connection, i.e., the SC client/server/host (B) needs to 'invite' a connection.

2.) The viewer (running in listen mode) is notified that the client is ready to connect.
Then a connection can be established for remote control (A->B).

Simple enough, BUT very hard to find! Here's where I finally found the hints I needed:

http://www.uvnc.com/onlinehelp/6.html - see #7 & #8

I think  - I've looked at so many links, posts, etc., my head is spinning... anyway, long story short... I got it working! Just tested it out with my brother. Only problem was avast! AV didn't like the extension...
and Outlook stripped the attachment from the message... had to send it as a .txt and then have it renamed...

Thanks all, back to work on figuring out the Repeater and NAT stuff...
