Does anyone have any experience with ChuckVNC's Mac server?

I would like to be able to support some mac users, the read me states it has only been tested on 10.4.10. Has anyone gotten it to work with snow leopard?

i don't have knowledge on mac, so will be perfect test for basic user.

I have my own US based repeater i could use. However reading the ChuckVNC documentation it sounds like I'll need to compile it on a mac first.

Sorry that the Mac documentation isn't very clear, I'll make it better in the next release.

The only files required from InstantSupport_OSX.zip are:

InstantSupport.app
server.txt

The other files are just the source code.

You only need to replace example.no-ip.com with your repeater address in the server.txt file.

It will be hard to test with a public repeater because the current version of InstantSupport for Mac does not show you the ID number, you have to look at the repeater log.

Please let me know what kinds of problems you run into as the only testing I've done with this is through a virtual machine.

Sadly not, Mac support is possible by utilizing the x11vnc project which currently doesn't support any DSM encryption plugins.

The viewer should prompt you that you are connecting to an insecure connection.

I think you've misunderstood my previous post.

The .app is already compiled.

You only need these two files out of the zip:

InstantSupport.app
server.txt

Modify the server.txt file with the address of your repeater.

NOTE: If you don't care to modify the source code ignore the other files in the zip.

1) Extract InstantSupport.app and server.txt from the InstantSupport_OSX directory.

2) In the server.txt file change example.no-ip.com to your repeaters address.

3) Create a .dmg or .zip of server.txt and InstantSupport.app.

When the InstantSupport app is executed it will generate a random ID, read the server.txt file and establish a reverse connection with your repeater.

The InstantSupport icon will be displayed in the dock while the program is running.


Known issues:
InstantSupport won't display the ID, you will have to look at the repeater log to know what the ID number is.

InstantSupport closes when the viewer disconnects, to reconnect you will have to run InstantSupport again which will generate a new ID number.

I'm not quite sure how to make it any more simple than this?

My bad, I thought you had a Mac to test with.

.zip is only for compression, it's impossible for a .zip to launch a program.

thanks for zipping the file for me. I had a very odd expereince with it though. The email you sent includes a .dmg file, however when I download it to my windows computer is changes it to .zip. Then when i upload it, a mac user can't use it.

What OS/Browser/Email client are you using? Downloads fine for me with Chrome/Win7. If for some reason something on your computer is changing the file extension, just change it back to .dmg

I'll look into the possibility of the viewer being a self containted executable like InstantSupport.
In the mean time, after compiling just create a zip file of the Viewer folder.

I think I'm going to do some more work on the Mac InstantSupport now that I know there is interest in it. Then we can test more!

Still looking to get the Mac thing working (I'm not a mac guy so I don't have one, but hey a computer's a computer in my experience. Bought a iBook and played around enough to figure out where stuff is hidden and sold it, the rest is research) Anyway, the Windows Compressed Folder function didn't like how it was compressed but 7Zip handled it fine.

I think I have a Sucker... um, make that "Tester" lined up - how to I turn my ZIP file into a DMG?

  * If you never use the viewer outside the LAN that your repeater is running on you don't need to forward port 5901, this will add extra security by not allowing a viewer to connect to the repeater outside of your LAN.

I tested version 3.1 on a customers Snow Leopard Mac today and it worked just fine, feel free to let me know of any Mac issues.

It seems to be based on UltraVNC code.
I believe pgmoney (one of the UltraVNC devs) creates commercial applications for Advantig.
