CTRL-ALT-DEL on Windows server 2008 x64 uvnc 1.0.8.2.

Post by alienreptile9 »

I've seen multiple topics on this referring to Vista and Windows 7, but not much on 2008 with the latest version which I'm using 1.0.8.2.

I receive no errors at all, everything else seems to work, but I can not get CTRL-ALT-DEL to work at all. I use ctrl-alt-F4 with no luck, I right-click on the title bar and choose send ctrl-alt-del with no luck, I click the button on the far left of the uvnc toolbar for ctrl-alt-del with no luck. I can click on buttons on the login screen (the one for ease of access) and hit the space bar to select check boxes and such so that tells me that mouse and keyboard inputs are being sent. The CAD.EXE and SCHOOK.DLL files are both located in the ultravnc program folder. I say this because I've seen multiple posts referring to those missing for some reason. They were there after the installation. However still, I'm not able to log intot he server because CTRL-ALT-DEL does not function. Any help on this would be appreciated.

I'm using Windows server 2008 Enterprise x64 with sp2.

I got tired of this problem and just edited the registry to remove the CAD requirement from Windows.

Ok, so far I'm still unsure what a work around or fix is for this. The replies are very vague. Can anyone please shed some light on this?

You've got your volunteer! I'm having that problem with Windows 7. Just let me know when it's done.

Is that what he was saying? I'll volunteer for this for Win2k8. I had no idea what that post was saying.

I think that's what he meant. He asks about help debugging, (which I took to mean testing).

CAD removal instructions:

Put these lines into a text file name "remove-cad.reg" Save it and double click the resulting file to merge the information into the registry. Reboot to see the effects. This is only good on Vista/Windows 7/Server 2008. XP/Server 2003 is different, but somewhat similar, you can Google for those entries easily.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
"DisableCAD"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DisableCAD"=dword:00000001

Is there anything planned to get CAD to work with Vista without having UAC enabled? I noticed a program called Dameware has acomplished this somehow.

What if there was some command line version of TweakUAC that enabled UAC temporarily after the CAD button is clicked and then disabled UAC after CAD has been sent to the desktop?

The problem: To disable UAC, you get a uac popup...

Any plans to use this instead of CAD.exe in the near future? It seems to work for Vista as well as Windows 7:

Just want to exchange and share some information (didn't use 64bit, but may be it's same problem as yours):

Installed ultraVNC 1.8.0.2 for testing on a Windows Server 2008 32bit machine:

First time installation: let "Vista add-on Downloads" clicked, but didn't install mirror drivers. UAC was active. It worked perfectly. But had to make a reinstall of WIN2008 Server because of other problems.

Afterwards I installed same ultraVNC 1.8.0.2 again on a clean windows server 2008, this time without any Vista add-Ons and mirror drivers (unclicked it because of not having VISTA but Win2008). Result: CTRL-ALT-DEL responded with an: "CRTL-ALT-DEL require service, no permission". UAC on Windows was activated just like before.

Then checked the forum, but there wasn't any information on Windows Server 2008, but information about Vista and CAD.exe. Then uninstalled ultraVNC 1.8.0.2 and reinstalled ultraVNC 1.8.0.2 with Vista add-Ons, so the CAD.exe was installed also. Result:
CTRL-ALT+DEL didn't do nothing at all. The MS-Logon window just kept there, like nothing would have been clicked.

After hours of search&tries, I've realized that the real difference between the first working installation and the second was the installation path(in the second I've changed the installation path to another drive partition. Then I installed ultraVNC 1.8.0.2 into the standard directory "program files", just like suggested by the ultrasetup. And... voila!!! IT WORKED!!! The CTRL+ALT+DEL-Button of the viewer was recognized.

Seems that when installing on Windows Server 2008 32bit, it works with the standard path. Whenever you change the installation path during setup.exe to somewhere else then the "program files" folder, CAD.exe will no longer work.

Thank you so much.

This took care of my problem

I too, was installing under Windows 2008 Server, but 64-bit. I had decided to put it into a different drive and directory, and was having the same problems. (I had installed with all the add-ins, etc. checked)

but when I removed it, then reinstalled it, with the same add-ins, drivers, mirrors, etc. as I had done the first time, but this time, left it with the default C:\Program files directory, it worked

Thanks, you saved me a lot of heartache and trying to disable uac and things like that..

Hi Guys,

I have got exactly the same problem with setting this up on Server 2k8 x64 SP2. I have an installation in the default c:\program files directory, but the problem with CAD is still there.

UAC is disabled, mirror drivers are installed, vista package is installed.
This is killing me

am i missing anything here??

any help would be appreciated.

Best regards

Software generated Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work by default if UAC is disabled. This is a (weird and stupid) design decision by Microsoft. ColtB45 posted a very nice workaround to this issue in these forums.

as workaround i can suggest to use thhe on screen keyboard.

i'm able to enter in my win 2k8 server by clicking the ease of access button in bottom left, select to view the on screen keyboard and then (on the on screen kyboard) click:
shift
ctrl
alt
del

voilà, i can enter user and pwd

hope this help
