Hi,
I'm trying to control a Win7 server from an XP client.
Often the viewer windows opens and quickly closes.
Sometimes it takes several minutes to get a connection.
If I leave the viewer open for an hour or two the connection locks up and sometimes the server machine locks up.
When the viewer window opens it often starts out skewed (as if the horizontal sync was off) but then straightes out. This is not a critical issue like the others.
I'm running 1.0.8.1 on both the viewer and server. I upgraded from 1.0.8.0 where I had most of the same problems (not the horizontal sync issue).
Is there anything I can do to fix these problems?
Thanks,
Ed

Re: Problems with server on Win7
The skewed look strange, this was something in 108 and fixed in 1081.
Resolution ?
Connect with a fix seting ( not the viewer auto mode) when bandwidth isn't stable the auto mode sometimes bahavee bad.
connection locks, sometimes server locks: Does the server lock because network is gone or is he realy dead ?
Are you using a WIfi ?

Thanks for your help!
I connected with the LAN setting and it connected right up (and without the skewing). But I'll have to get a bit more experience to see if it really makes a difference.
Both server and viewer are on my LAN. The server with wifi and the viewer is wired. Bandwidth on both machines should be very good as the router wireless router is quite near the server.
When the server locks. What happens is that the viewer freezes so I close it. Then I go to the server. The mouse sill works UNTIL I click on an icon (like the start button) then it locks completely and I have to reboot.
I think I've seen where NOT rebooting SOMETIMES allows the server to come back to life but only after a very long delay. I'm not certain about that though.
Thanks again,
Ed

is your WiFi at ultravnc server computer going in to sleep mode if there no local input (winvnc side) ?
control panel ... power option... advanced setting... wireless adapter
about
winvnc built 24.11.2009 23:04 ?
vncviewer built 22.11.2009 15:34 ?

Re: Problems with server on Win7
Thanks for the suggestion.
No, it's not going to sleep. I have the sleep setting at "never".
BTW, Rudi was right about the skewing being in 8.0 and not 8.1. I thought both server and viewer were at 8.1 but only the server was. I updated the viewer and the skewing is gone.
If I don't try to keep the connection alive, I can reconnect at any time (so that indicates the server isn't in sleep mode).
But if I keep the viewer open and inactive it evenually freezes. I.E. the viewer screen won't change but, oddly, the mouse pointer does move.
If I try to start a new connection I have to wait a very long time (more than 5 minutes) for the connection to kick in. What could the server be doing in all that time?
Thanks for your help,
Ed

Re: Problems with server on Win7
Hi,
Well I reluctantly installed RealVNC. Not that I wanted to but I needed to find a solution.
So far it seems to be working.
I've only had a few test so far because I have to wait to see if the connection dies or not; and that takes a while.
It seems that Real keeps the server from blanking the server's screen; and it seems to kill the idle connection after a few hours. But when it kills the connection it seems to do it in a way that allows for a normal re-connect.
My hunch, and that's all it is, is that Real uses some sort of "keep alive" mechanism so that the server doesn't disconnect. And, it may use a inactivity timer to close the connection after a few hours.
Anyway, that's my observations as of now. I'll let you know if anything interesting developes.

i forgot, did you check if this line exist "IdleTimeout=" in ultravnc.ini ?
if not, you can add it.
the 0 value, there no disconnect at all.

Re: Problems with server on Win7
Hi Redge,
I just checked and both the server and viewer are set to Idle Timeout=0.
I'm now testing to see if I lose the connection when the server has a screen saver active rather than just blanking the screen.
The logic behind this is that with Real the server screen never seemed to blank out.
Thanks for your help,
Ed

Re: Problems with server on Win7
I think I've found the solution.
I have to have a screen saver on the server. As long as the screen saver is running the connection persists.
Allowing the server to blank the screen causes serious connection issues.
Hope this will help others,
Ed

Re: Problems with server on Win7
winvnc admin propertiesAllowing the server to blank the screen causes serious connection issues.
enable blank monitor on viewer request
enable alpha-blending monitor blanking and put only background.bmp to folder of ultravnc where is installed winvnc.exe
no any other name allowed.,
it could be a text or picture that tell don't touch or under software maintenance anything you want.
ultravnc server over wifi, you can modify the ultravnc.ini
sendbuffer=1500
WIFI < 1500
LAN 4096/8192
