very slow response

Post by ab »

Hello,

I have installed the latest 1.0.6.5 server version on a windows 2003 standard edition

I am accessing this server from a xp pro machine but the problem is that the server is reacting slow to actions

for example if i double click the "my computer" icon on the server, i need to wait a couple of seconds before the windows explorer is actually shown..(even maybe click 3 times untill it will open the window)

the server is a intel xeon 3.2Ghz with SP1 and 3GB of ram. i have watched the video card in the device manager and is says "rage xl pci family"

the xp machine is a intel core 2 2.4Ghz with SP 2 and 2GB of ram. The video card shows "nvidia quadro nvs 285 128mb"

we have also another server, and on that server is the response time much better. It reacts instantly when you click an icon and opens windows explorer with a single double click in a couple of milliseconds i think..

and all of this is situated on a LAN

any suggestions?

Thanks!

i have tried it and it is a little bit faster but not "fast fast"

Are there any options to configure so i can make it just a little bit faster?

thanks

Check the poll options. (server option)
1) If 108 is installed and the driver download was selected
the driver was also installed.
use driver + poll fullscreen + low accuracy
While the viewer is connected connected, you can verify if the driver is active
2) Poll fullscreen + hookdll + low accuracy
If you don't wan't to use the driver , this give the best results in my case.

You can also check poll foreground window, to make updates on
the focussed window faster.

Depending on the bandwidth you can manual select encoders.
(viewer option)
hextile -> LAN
Tight or ZRLE -> Internet

Check cpu usage.
There is a throttle that limit the winvnc.exe to 40% cpu.
In most cases you don't need to change this, as you don't want that
vnc use more cpu. But, depending of the cpu and remote applications
another value can be set ( 60%)
This can be done in the ultravnc.ini max_cpu

Color depth server.
24bit is slow ( and no driver support), 32 and 16 is faster.

What the difference between the 2 servers ?
hardware or/and software ?

what the color display setting of your ATi Rage XL on the server 2003 sp1 (I recommand SP2, we have fixed a lot of critical bug with terminal service enabled on running on it)

like wrote Rudi, you need to set on server the colors to 32bit or 16bit

hello,

yes i have installed SP2 yesterday but no difference.

so in case of software differences, i think they are identical now, bot 2003 standard and sp2.

Off course both have other programs installed and also the "slow" one is servicing as a print server.

Both servers are set to 32bit, same resolution etc. Only the screen refresh rate is on the fast one 75Hertz and on the slow one 70Hertz

I have set the slow one also to 75Hertz, and 16bit for testing but no difference.

Could this be a faulty installation of VNC on the server? because i deinstalled the previous version and without rebooting i installed the new one

default screen refresh is 60Hz but i don't know if this can slowdown the refresh if 70 or 75 Hz screeb refresg

without reboot, some file could be still opened and would not be replaced until reboot.
you can check if replaced, right click on winvnc systray running and check the built date.

hi,

not to brag or anything but...

"Poll Foreground Window" says very little to the user about typing being shown slow, maybe it could be renamed or some hints could be displayed for such settings. I was struggling long with the delayed typing until I found this topic and the magic setting =)

secondly, I would take it rather logical that if I select the Ultra option for the connection, all the magic would be set automatically, but again - maybe I'm just being picky.

anyway, just my humble input. the software is still very good for it's purpose =)

regards,

J.M.
