Can I tell if screen is powered on?

Post by vector »

I use UltraVNC to manage a remote computer that displays a class schedule on a large monitor in a school lobby. Sometimes the power to the monitor is turned off, but my remote connection shows everything running normally. Is there to tell whether the remote monitor is powered off?

Thanks
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

this sounds very interesting.
Do you connect via uvnc to an PC who is connected with this screen? or how do it work?
If you connect with your PC to an other PC(that has the Screen pluged in) maybe you can turn off the screensaver or control a software from the monitor(if it have one). with "monitor is powering off" you mean a normal screensaver or what?
maybe the monitor is configureable itselfe for example: "turn off after xx minutes of disuse"?

Hi Marc,

Thanks for your response. Yes, I connect to a PC that is connected to the screen. But I don't have a problem with the screensaver, I have an occasional problem with people physically turning the monitor off. (I'm working on securing the monitor so that it can't be tampered with.)

So is there a way to tell if the machine I remote to has its monitor turned on?

Hi Jeff,

it is very funny if the kids are turning the monitor off to not see the the class schedule :).
I searched a little bit in the internet for you and found an issue someone tried to capture an "monitor-on/off-event" from windows or something. But this is not possible. Windows do not have any event and as I know the monitor is not saying windows "iam now shutting off please react".(as you know what I mean) I think you have to protect the button from reaching like open the monitor and release the cable coming from the button going to the platine. You then have to turn off the power as to pull out the powercable every evening I think.

Here you can read the Forums post as I said upper here in this post:

Hope I could help you.
