I use the dyndns.org business..., on XP with RC 18 or wutever...
The shortcut I use for the client is:
"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" myname.dyndns.org:5800 -password mypassword
It gets to the Negotiating Protocol Version... in the login box, and ends up spitting out the error:
Error reading Protocol Version
-forgot to select dsmplugin
-viewer/server not compatible
I want to use the client so that I can have the toolbar, with the file transfer button - that would be awesome!
I get the feeling this is a common problem/confusion. If there's a webpage on how to fix this, I'd appreciate the pointer...
I (think I) understand that the dsm plugin is for encryption/security. I don't have one on the server. When I'm at home on LAN, there's no problem using the client - only problem is when trying to connect with client over the internet.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Possibly using the port 5900 which is the server default would be better?... You of course would need to forward that port also if it wasnt already set up to be forwarded.
By default - the ports are 5900 for viewer and 5800 for java viewer.
Since you are using the string -
"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" myname.dyndns.org:5800 -password mypassword
Either you already have the default server ports set up the same exact thing for the Java viewer and the default viewer or you dont.

Ok - I didn't see your reply, so I tried some random *port*.... Removing all reference to the port number from the shortcut worked just fine! woohoo! And per your suggestion, putting in 5900 (the correct viewer, not http, port also worked - woohoo!
Sheesh. It's Monday - forgive me please...
Thanks!
