Hi,
sorry if it's already answered. But I've spend days searching for the answer... and although the problem was infamous, the answer was never there.
I've got a PC, behind a NAT router.
Currently running UltraVNC Server version v1.0.0 RC16b, Build 5-05-2004
I've set the winvnc server to listen to port# 5901
I've routed port 5901 TCP to my PC's IPaddress.
When i connect to my PC over the internet using either xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1 or xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx::5901 and I enter my password (correctly). I get disconnected, almost immediately.
To be more precise:
I get connected.
I can (sometimes) see the top part of the screen, about 50 - 70 pixelrows.
But no more.
My control still reaches over the whole screen.
But when i do a full refresh, i immediately get disconnected.
And the Viewer-program just closes.
Does anyone have an idea?
One more thing: with tightVNC i get a ReadExact error and something about sockets...

prob. connecting over inet with (Ultra)VNC
one more thing
And one more thing: Whenever i use VNC over my internal network, everything works like a charm.
We have EXACTLY (I mean EXACTLY !) the same problem. We have found that (in our case) is an ISP problem (configuration, software, hardware, we don't know really), not a VNC problem.
We have a hardware NAT router (D-Link DI-604) connected to an ADSL Modem (Tainet), and we have found 2 workarounds to the problem:
1) We unpluged the hardware NAT router and installed a software NAT router like WinRoute, and the problem disapeared.
2) We changed our ISP provider, keeping the hardware NAT router, and the problem disapeared.
Hope that helps ...

Firmware changed
Hi, tnx for the reply.
Well, me, thinking i'm a smart guy...
I've just finished uploading new firmware to the modem/router.
I've got an E-tech Analog Modem-router V2.
After flashing in the new firmware I found out that my entire router configuration menu was changed.
But still no result
The only thing that i'm still in the dark about, is the RIP option.
But in comparison with another modem/router the configuration is the same.
If there's anyone who wants to help. Just name the info you need (Don't try ip-address or username/password, i won't give it )

Most likely your hardware or config
I have used multiple versions of VNC over the rears through NAT and have never had a problem. I suggest you may have an issue with your NAT device. Latency causing timeouts or just plain poor NAT code on the device.
I cant even connect
You guys were able to connect. I cant even connect. I am using Negear RT314 router latest firmware behind a cable modem.
What is MRU/MTU and where do you check/change the settings? I am completely ignorant about it
