Create a single click minimal install to give remote assista

Single Click discussions / bugs

Single Click is very clever and I understand the desire of the creator to keep it simple. The fewer bells a n whistles the more stable the tool is.

The art must be in finding other tools to run along side SC to give you the functionality you require. For instance the problem of remote technicians is not a VNC problem, it is a road warrior application to link to SC. Try openVPN these guys are also very clever.

openvpn is to limited

+require a tap driver
+w2k and XP only

Openvpn is a good solution for a dedicated connection, but
to hard for a "on the road" solution.
Driver installation and OS's are to limited to make it suitable for a general SC solution.

This is GREAT!

Post by Gumby »

I have everything working great now but I was wondering how many connections can the repeater/SC handle? I have it set with 10 connections... can it acctually handle that many? (in my connect to window is says Tech01, Tech02, Tech03, etc.) ALSO is there a way to make it so on the server with the repeater it can repeat the information to a java viewer? The dilemma is that my technicians are frequently on computers (library, coffee shop, etc.) where they can't install the VNC viewer and it would be excellent if it were possible for them to log into a "web viewer" on our server (similar to the java viewer) that way they don't need to install anything.

Any Ideas?

I have been thinking about this one too, it is why I ended up this forum. Is there a way to run UltraVnc without it having to write to the registry?

If so then the engineer on the move could carry a USB key as there could be few PC's around now that would not accept one.

SC Forum...

This thread has now reached 9 pages - maybe there should be a forum specifically for Single-Click?

Problems with SC

Post by Gumby »

I have been using the SC piece for a few days now and it has been great... except when I connect to a someone with a slower connection the screen looks choppy and I can't see 40% of the screen 60% of the time... Is it possible to make it look better? or make a shortkey in SC to refresh the screen?

I would like to thank everyone that has been working on this. This is pretty awesome stuff.

I have used this software and I am impressed by what I have seen so far. I am using this to replace ExpertVNC we have running at work. ExpertVNC works with UltraVNC listener software. ExpertVNC also charges $500+ per copy so I figure why not go to just using UltraVNC? Also, UltraVNC is open source and I like that.

This UltraVNC is nearly identical to the ExpertVNC setup which we were using (they both use the UltraVNC listener). Here are the differences I have noticed and would like to get them implemented if we can get it figured out. Please help.

1.) When running multiple VNC windows with SingleClick it just lists WinVNC in the titlebar. I would like to have the computer name and ip address listed there instead. This is what ExpertVNC does and I am sure they grabbed that feature from UltraVNC somewhere. This will also make it easier to work with multiple VNC sessions at the same time.

2.) Ctrl+Alt+Del functionality. That is needed.

3.) Chat feature does not seem to work. (Not a critical feature but would be nice if it worked).

I just want to say great job to all those developing this tool. I have been test the SC off Rudi's site but when I try to do a file transfer, everything is greyed out. What am I doing wrong?

Thansk again

Make sure you are using UltraVNC RC19 on your computer. They had to rewrite the file transfer in RC19 and SingleClick is based off of RC19. So that is why the file transfer in SingleClick does not work with servers that use earlier versions of UltraVNC.

After reading another thread I found out Ctrl+Alt+Del functionality is not possible since that would require it to write to the registry. That would not work for what we are doing here.

Does anybody know about requests 1 and 3?

*bump*
First off - great lil program (Single Click and UltraVNC) Very impressed with Single Click for those remote helpdesk calls that you dont have the server running on.

Should this be in its own little forum area?

There are a ton of things about this program we could discuss.. and not only that its great and Im sure someone out there has some good ideas and or problems that the devs could assist them with - e.g. the previous post about the Ip/computer name and chat...

another option

Post by Gumby »

There needs to be an option to have the SC start on a reboot. I am using autoit right now to try and do this but it is extremely sloppy and unprofessional. I fix computers for customers and need to reboot frequently when doing a defrag etc can't be done during business hours it can take days for me to finish because i upgrade the computer (sp2 or whatever) that takes a few hours and a restart. the next night I have them reconnect again because nobody was there after the upgrade to let me do a disk check and finish configuring the computer.... I'm sure many people would agree there needs to be a popup or a checkbox or something to have SC automatically reconnect after a computer is rebooted. Instead of stripping it out completely why not make it an option?

SC need to be simple

With Service:
To get support
1) logoff
2) logon as administrator
3) download SC
4) Install service
5) logoff
6) log back in as user
---
Hope that the end user don't have "Fast user switching enabled"-->else black screen
---
7) open your application and show me the trouble...
8) Remove service box needed
9) Remove application box needed
---
Broken connection, service keeps running. Potential security leak.
---

I understand the need for a version that let reconnect after reboot.
But it have to be a seperate version.
I will take a look after RC19 is stable.

SC and VNC on BartPE

Post by nu2bart »

@Rudi De Vos

I agree with Rudy that the SC should be as simple as possible, just running on the user's current desktop...

If the system of the enduser has so much trouble that the SC does not work and the customer is to far away you cannot jump in the car, then the enduser should start ultravnc from a bootable CD based on BartPE...

I already have a ultravnc service (19.4) plugin for BartPE. But the latest winvnc.exe is lacking support for the -id command line parameter so I cannot connect to a repeater from BartPE.

But when the "-id" parameter gets added in future versions (just give it time) than ultravnc cannot also connect to the repeater in cases when SC does not work or in case the endusers machine does not boot.

Regards,
Bart.

just an idea

Post by Gumby »

What if you made a script that will run after reboot once and then erase itself... if you need to reboot again just install the script and run it again... This way it is only used when you need it. Or when SC is installed it will look to see if a txt file named SC.txt is at c:\SC.txt if it isn't it will install itself and then it will make the text file. When the computer reboots SC checks if the *.txt file is present and if it is instead of running itself it uninstalls itself and erases the text file. That way the only time SC reconnects is if you manually erase the *.txt file. (there could be a button to automate this process)

(btw I'm not a programmer so there is probably a better more efficient way to do this but it's an idea)

I have a simple idea to make it restart after reboot without writing to the registry. How about this? Why not just create a shortcut to the file inside the startup folder?

I know we will miss the login screen but hey if the enduser is their i am sure they can do that part. What do you think?

i dont know

Post by Gumby »

If it is placed in the startup folder it will run itself but the user will still have to initiate a connection which doesn't simplify a lot. I like the small file size... Mine is currently 169kb which is great but maybe you could make a seperate program that could be SC-Reconnect and if we need to reconnect we send the file to their computer and run it. all that program does is after the computer is restarted it tries to reconnect to whatever SC's last connection was and doesn't uninstall your SC.exe then all you have to add to SC is if SC-RECONNECT exist don't uninstall else uninstall or whatever. Hows that sound?

To be able to reconnect after reboot you need admin access.
MS has the runserviceonce key for it the registry. (admin only access, else a serious security leak)

To cntr-alt-del to activate the logon screen you also need to be running as service.

I will try to add to a future version a install service window that ask admin password. The service then can be installed in context of that user without the need to logoff and on as admin.

Yes the file is based on ultr@. You cannot use the latest encryption plug-in yet. That will soon be coming Rudi has assured me.

This software is awesome

Post by RemoteSupportGuy »

I had to deal with a software company the other day and they used supportanypc.com. I was extremely impressed with the functionality and read somewhere that it was based on UltraVNC. I searched and low and behold I have found UltraVNC SC.

I just want to thank you Rudi for all your hard work . This is almost exactly what I have been looking for. I also want to add to others opinions that there is a strong need for reconnect after reboot. supportanypc.com can do it and since it is also based on UltraVNC I am sure that UltraVNC SC is capable of doing it.

They Probably are installing it as a service, then when the customer reboots, they have a script start that run winvnc.exe -connect whateverip.com:5500

i thot you can autoconnect using that DIRECT option in the helpdesk.txt file where it configures sc to autoconnect upon double click... isn't that right rudi??

I am getting the following error when I load the SC exe:

Connection Failed - error reading protocol version

Possible causes:
- You've forgotten to select a DSMPlugin and the Server uses a DSMPlugin
-Viewer and Server are not compatible (they use different RFB protocols)
-Bad connection

The viewer is running in /listen mode and i am using latest UVC build. Any ideas???

Thanks in advance!
