Running UltraVNC under Linux with WINE

Post by KL7K »

I have found several references on the Internet to sucessfully running UltraVNC on a Linux machine using the WINE program. I can get evertying installed but get the error message
"Connection Failed - Error reading Protocol Version"
Does anyone know what is going on?
I need to run UltraVNC because of the MRSC4 plug-in. We use the key for security.

Any suggestions as to what is going wrong?

At work we use this plugin as well. I created a bug report (for Wine) for it a while ago but I don't think any developers really looked at it. I actually have a good idea of what the problem is with the old DSM plugin - which seems to be what you're using, as I had the same error message. See this page for more info ...

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13647

I can connect fine with the old plugin under Wine now if I edit the min/max/default key length defined in the CSP it's getting in Wine. See the link above, as the edit is pretty straight forward.

I still dunno what the issue is with the newer version of the DSM plugin, as it bombs with "Unknown Authentication Scheme" and never prompts for the username/pass, though the DSM log shows no issues. I was actually browsing here for any info on that when I stumbled on this :p

SSVNC seems to be what we are looking for I guess, as it seems to even have dsm support. However, a few quick tests and I still couldn't get it to work with the DSM plugin we use. I think the main issue is me not understanding how to use the ssvnc app to specificy username/password. It's kind of a messy app imo.

It would be nice if the issues concerning UltraVNC and Wine were just fixed, as it is a much more intuitive app. My guess is it will be a while before a Wine developer even bothers looking at it unfortunately.
