I placed the sc on my win98 computer.
Put the viewer in listening mode on the XP
Double clicked on the Internet Support on the SC. (Win98)
Both are in listening mode, but it is not showing me any screen on my viewer computer (XP)

Please advise what I do next

I found in the Tight VNC Viewer/Options/Global that the listening server was "accept reverse VNC connections on TCP port 5500" It would not let me change it to 5900 so I change my SC to that port instead.
I am now receiving on the XP computer the below message, but still no screen

Accepting Reverse Connection
Status: Protocol version negotiated

Any advice would be gratefully received.

So you were not using the default port 5500.

Have you run the viewer listening at 5900?
You should start the viewer in Cmd Prompt as:

Code: Select all

vncviewer.exe -listen 5900

Then at the Win98 pc, chick the 1st host setting (Internet support ) to connect.

In the command prompt I pasted
C:\Program Files\TightVNC\vncviewer.exe -listen 5900

But it came back as an unrecognised command

Are you using the UltraVNC viewer? Tight-vncviewer.exe is unable to work with SC.
You can download the UltraVNC viewer here

You should:
1. Open a DOS CMD windows.
2. Switch to the folder where UVNC viewer saved.
3. Run the command:
　　vncviewer.exe -listen 5900

And then at the Win98 pc, chick the 1st host setting (Internet support ) to connect.

I would like to thank you for your help. I uninstalled Tight VNC and then installed UltraVNC. I was then able to remote into both my computers. I then tried the Single Click and that worked great as well.

Just a question though. I had to have both the computers in Listening mode before I could use them. Is that normal? If so, how do I get it to automatically start in listening mode when I boot up the computer.

I did what you advised in the DOS Command Prompt and it worked. It was listening for Port 5900. When I restarted the computer, it went back to looking for Port 5500

Sorry I'm a little bit confused with your setup, but I think you may be mixing up some different products/components of UltraVNC. So first of all, I would like to make it clear.

You can obtain three products from www.uvnc.com, they are:
1. The VNCviewer (the link I told you), which is used to:
　　- connect to a remote UVNC Server PC, or
　　- waiting the connection (i.e. listening) from a remote PC (either SC or UVNC Server)

2. The Single Click (SC), which is used to:
　　- connect to a remote PC having a listening viewer

3. The UltraVNC Server (Package), which is used to:
　　- Waiting the connection from a (remote PC's) VNCviewer, or
　　- connect to a (remote PC's) listening VNCviewer
　　When you download & install this package, it provides a VNCviewer.exe too.


So basically, you should make it clear which product(s) you will use.


Now let us discuss your tests/question.

I uninstalled Tight VNC and then installed UltraVNC. I was then able to remote into both my computers.

I suppose you had downloaded & installed the UltraVNC Server on both computer, and was able to remote access them.

I then tried the Single Click and that worked great as well.

That's good. Just one problem: If you have the UVNC server installed, by default it listens on 5900 too. In that case if you start a listening viewer on 5900 (vncviewer.exe -listen 5900), you should get an error.
Anyway you got it work. Back to the last paragraph, did you really have the UVNC server installed?

Do you mean you had run the viewer in listening mode ON BOTH COMPUTER?
Or did you see the green EYE ICON on the SysTray? --- Similar to the listening viewer, the UVNC server also put a green EYE ICON on SysTray.

Were you doing the exact same procedure?

1. Open a DOS CMD windows.
2. Switch to the folder where UVNC viewer saved.
3. Run the command:
　　vncviewer.exe -listen 5900

In theory, this should not happen.
If the viewer fail to listen on 5900, it will produce an error, and should not switch to 5500.
Would it happen that you type the extra space between the command? like:
vncviewer.exe{space}-listen{space}{space}5900

Sorry, I did not mean to confuse you. I was practising with 2 packages.

I done what you recommended and removed TighVNC and installed UVNC

1) I needed to put SC on the Win98.

I could not email SC because it is an .exe file, so I installed UltraVNC with the Vewer and the Server on win98 and WinXP computer, remoted in and used the file transfer facility to place the SC on the desktop of the Win98.

2) Now the SC is on the desktop of the Win98 and I have removed the UVNC server and Viewer

I put UVNC Viewer on the XP in listening mode, I was able to accept the connection from SC on Win98.
The listening mode in the taskbar said it was listening on Port 5500

The Dos Prompt
I did what you advised in the DOS Command Prompt and it worked. It was listening for Port 5900. When I restarted the computer, it went back to looking for Port 5500. The command only seemed to hold whilst the computer was active.
I copy and pasted your command into the DOS prompt (as outlined below) to make sure I had it right.

c:\

c:/UltraVNC
c:/UltraVNC/vncviewer.exe -listen 5900

OK! I understand the whole scene.

But the commands you put into the DOS prompt are not correct. Switching to the UVNC folder should not involve the "\windows" folder. Use of the Slash (/) is not correct too.

When you start/restart your XP computer,
1. Open a DOS prompt.
2. Enter the following command (just one single line only)

"c:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5900

Note: make sure you use the BACK SLASH (\), not the SLASH (/)
This should be OK to start the viewer on listening mode on 5900.

OK. Then the command works as expected.

Restarts computer.

No green eye listening in task bar.

It is normal.
Since vncviewer.exe is an application. It will terminate once you log off or restart your pc.
If you want it to be running after reboot your pc, you need put the necessary command inside the "Startup" folder.

Goes to:
programs/ultraVNC Viewer/run UltraVNC Viewer (Listening Mode)
Checks again in task bar, still listening on Port 5500

If you want to start the vncviewer to listen on 5900 AFTER RESTART THE PC, you need to RE-DO the exact same procedure I mentioned (or the pc redo it automatically if you has put the necessary command inside the "Startup" folder), i.e.
