I generally understand it, but can't get it to work....

Post by veryfrustrated »

Hi all,

Trying to use UltraVNC to support clients.

I've setup the single click executable ok, with my correct IP address and using port 5512.

I installed the Viewer on my PC. When I run the viewer, it asks for the 'server' host name. Am I supposed to know all my clients IP addresses to get this to work?

I'm under the impression that it can be used in this way: they run the single click, then I run the viewer and it sees their attempt to connect and lets me into their PC. Can someone clarify how this works?

Secondly, I port forwarded 5512 to my local IP address in my router, but if I use one of the open port checkers on the internet it says it can't access that port (that its closed).

HELP! I think I'm close, but just can't get this all working.

Thanks

Are you starting the VNC viewer in listening mode? When you start it in listening mode it should just minimize immediately to your system tray. You should have a couple different icons to start the VNC Viewer in listening mode (encrypted, non encrypted).

When you hover over the tiny VNC Viewer icon (listening mode) down in your system tray it should say 'listening' when you mouse over it.

BTW, you need to have your VNC Viewer in listening mode before they try to run VNC SC (singleclick)

Hi and thanks for the reply.

I've since noticed that 'listening mode' shortcut. I'm waiting til the morning (1am here in Sydney) so I can try it with a remote computer. Still not sure if my ports are open though, all reports say no, but I don't know why - Windows firewall has an exception for the port, and my router has port forwarding setup.

Will see how I go tomorrow.

Let us know what antivirus/firewall software you have *if* your ports continue to be blocked preventing connection. And what you are using to scan your ports.

I'm an idiot. I was using a variety of the web sites that check to see if the port you specify is open, which all failed. I thought if they were port forwarded and not blocked by the system, the check would pass ANYTIME, however it only passes if I have UltraVNC listening at the same time that I check. My mistake.

In addition, I have a friend check with single click and it all works perfectly! Fantastic, and FREE! Whats the catch? :)

Thanks for your help mate.
