RC18 crashed Win 2003 - what did I do wrong?

When I tried to connect with an RC 18 client to an RC 18 server, it rebooted the Win 2003 machine the server was running on!

I've looked through the FAQ, but I don't know what I need to do. I had RC 11 running as a service on a Win 2003 Server box, and I installed RC 18 and just overwrote the directory and the service and everything. That should work, right? Or did I need to use the Windows Add & Remove Programs utility to completely remove it first? Or is there something in the Default Settings I should have had set before trying to connect to the server?

I've read something about making sure to uninstall the old video driver first, but I'm not sure what that's talking about. If they mean that extra video hook driver, I don't think I ever installed that.

Bottom line is...how can I install this on more servers and VNC into them without rebooting them? Thanks!

I recommend completely removing any old version before installing RC18. I had several problems with crashing on machines that had previously had older versions, but once I uninstalled everything and reinstalled RC18, the crashing stopped.

I am having the same problem even after removing all the older versions and reinstalling the new one.

By any older versions -

I think that means any RealVNC, or UltraVnc versions. Uninstall all of them, and reboot. Running a reg cleaner helps too.

Why your computer is restarting when connecting is interesting.

I would have to say I have used RC18, RC19_4 as servers and never have I had them reboot on me upon connection. (Win2KAS, W2K3 Server, XP Sp1, W2K Sp4).

Have you checked your event log on the server machine to find out what occured or why it may have shut down unexpectedly? I know those logs dont exactly give you a ton of information.. but It could be something in that log that can help you.?

I've been having the same issues and have always had to backrev to RC14 to resolve the issue on Win2003 servers.

I'll do some tests with cleaning the registry. What all should I be looking for in there?

Please check if it is not the RC11-RC18 driver issue.

RC18 detected the driver from RC11 as latest driver and refused
to upgrade.-->BSOD
Before upgrading to RC18 you need to manual remove the old driver via the device manager.

To stop the rebooting issue

right click on "my computer" choose "properties"
choose the "advanced" tab
click "settings" on "startup and recovery"
un-tick "automatically restart"
select the "write debugging information" to "none"

when if a program crashes hard it wont/shouldn't bring down the whole system now, of course if its anything like my video issue you will just get a blue screen instead (in "vncdrv.dll") which is probably worse for remote users than a auto-restart but at least you (local admin) will see in the bluescreen what caused it
