Java Viewer http port 80

Post by manictwo »

Hello.

I have a problem connecting to my server at home from work through a firewall.
I want to connect to my server with the java viewer on port 80 (which is the only port allowed to use at work).
When i type http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in my browser i can connect and type in my password, but then the java console says unknownhostexception and the connect hangs.
If i use a direct dialup connection (without firewall) from work i can connect on my server and all works fine.
Is it not possible to connect only at port 80?
I have tried several Versions of VNC, but everytime i get the same error.

Can someone helpp me please?

BTW: i can not change the firewall settings at work. there is only port 80 allowed.

method 1. use 80 as your VNC server's main port, use the regular VNC viewer and connect to "youraddress::80"

method 2. if you can handle VPN or tunneling tools like Zebedee, apply it on the port 80.
this has to be done carefully. confirm it to the network admin, or you may get into a serious trouble.

This is not possible, cause the firewall needs a login which is done bye a browserscript.

This is also not possible cause the Admins won´t like it :|

Is there no chance to connect via browser?
What does this error mean AFTER i connect to my server?

sorry but it's definitely negative.
there's still a VPN tool that disguises HTTPS traffic, but i cannot quite think of any way you can legally handle this after all, when "the Admins won't like it."
the best (and also worst) way you can take would be "taming" the admin so you're treated exceptionally :P

cheers

there are pay services - like go2mypc.com and lots of others

that basically create a ssh session to the website - you log into the website via ssh and you can control that computer.

This should work too but back to your initial problem -

to quote you -
"When i type http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in my browser i can connect and type in my password, but then the java console says unknownhostexception and the connect hangs. "

Since you yourself know that the only port open is 80 have you put in http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80 for grins... and are you sure it is working on your home network?

E.g. - do you have high speed at home with a router? Yes, did you set up the port forwarding properly for it to send the port 80 to your internal computer from external requests. If yes do you have a firewall on that computer or SP2 for XP? If yes did you turn those firewalls off?

Guess really the only way to test this from work is to send someone the link of http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80 then have them try to get in themselves while you are trying to set up port forwarding and disabling your firewalls.

It would be so much nicer for you if you had a friend that could test this from say a home inet connection but.. again Unless you know you set all that up properly, a test from work, is probabbly not the best idea to start from.

Second to last - it sounds like you cant use the viewer because you have a proxy at work, which makes you log in to it in order to get out. (This is how they track what it is you are doing). Have you tried or do you know how to ftp? That port is usually open out also and it is 21. SO now you have two ports to play with most likely.

Lastly - If I were you and you did get this to work - Your traffic will set off somewhat of a trigger to the network admins if they are watching carefully - and if you are logging into a proxy they may not have to watch just read a report. Either rate if you like your job, its always better to ask for permission first... if you dont like it ask for forgiveness and if not you just got a new reason to find your "dream job." Cuz that could be one thing covered for "Non" buisness related internet usage. If its buisness related talk to the IT staff they either A)Already do it and know how to connect B)Know about it but cant because of the policy of work or C)Dont know about it, and would be more than happy to help you --- or dont even want to think about helping you.

Enjoy.
