UltraVNC SC slow screen refresh on Viewer

Post by Bill H »

I have been testing UltraVNC 1.0.5 connecting two systems, both using Vista Home Basic (no Aero), over a LAN. When connected using the Server and Viewer components I get very good results. The screen refresh rate at the viewer end is very good and file/folder transfers move across the LAN with good speed.

The one irresolvable problem I have encountered occurs when I connect using UltraVNC SC with the Viewer running in listen mode. There is a 10 to 15 second screen refresh delay at the Viewer end.

I have searched the forums to see if I had missed something in the way I have things set up, and have come to the conclusion that the slow refresh rate is inherent to the UltraVNC SC and Viewer combination. Can someone who has resolved the same issue give me some help to speed up screen refreshes? If this issue is not resolvable I would appreciate confirmation of this, so that I can stop chewing on this bone.

UltraVNC is a laudable project. Those involved have done an excellent job. I’d like to use the SC component for WAN connectivity. This is the last piece of the puzzle and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your prompt response. When you state that I need to update my SC for Vista compatibility, I presumed that you meant me to download NiTro’s UltraVNC Single Click Launcher. I found the download link to be outdated, but did find a download at a link posted by twagner. When trying to compile both VNC Vewer-SC and VNC Server-SC I get this error message “Aut2Exe Error – Error: Error opening the destination file”.

As I advanced through the thread you directed me to, I came to realize that NiTro’s project is a work in progress. It seems he will have his SC Launcher finished in the near future. I’ll await its debut.

I may have misunderstood your response. Is there a newer version than UltraVNC 1.0.5 for download? I see reference to Version 1.0.5.2 in your reply to my post. There’s also a reference to an October 2008 Update 1.0.5.1 at the UltraVNC download site that takes me to the Sourceforge repository, where there is no further mention of an Update 1.0.5.1.

If I sound confused - I am. Can you elaborate a little. Thanks again.

Thank you for the pointer to UltraVnc 1.0.5.2. I now have this new version installed on both systems. However, the slow Viewer screen refresh rate when connecting from UltraVNC SC still persists.

If this is not the norm, then I am missing something in my configuration. I uninstalled the old version before installing the new version. I then installed the Vista drivers. I have vnchook.dll and schooks.dll in my UltraVNC folder. I also have mv2.dll in System32 and mv2.sys in System32/drivers. Device Manager shows My video hook driver2 under Display Adapters.

Is it correct to have vnchook.dll and schooks.dll in my UltraVNC folder or should they be in the System23 folder?

If this slow video refresh rate is not a SC to Viewer norm, then something is not set up correctly, and I don’t know what that might be. Can you provide me with some detailed guidance?

I have followed the thread at [topic=14063][/topic] and read all of the postings in their entirety. It seems that the slow Viewer video refresh rate using the original UltraVNC SC with Viewer in listen mode cannot be resolved.

I have downloaded the projects by NiTro and ilexius and will look into both options. NiTro seems to have devoted a lot of time and effort to his project, and I look forward to its final release.

This forum posts a lot of useful information, but it takes quite a bit of reading to get a first time user up to speed. Thank you for your help redge, you have me back on track.

Error: Error opening the destination file.

I found that is was my antivirus that was causing the problem. If I disabled the resident shield then ran the builder, I had no problems. I couldn't find an answer for this on the forum so I thought I add it here in case.
