Help to setup Repeater, have tried the step by step!

Post by flemming »

We have had no luck setting up the Repeater on our server by following the step by step instructions.
Could anyone help us whit this, or send this massage to some one that knows how to set it up.

You can set it up as a service using phw_repeater.exe -install. You'd then need to port forward TCP ports 5500 and 5901 to the machine running the repeater.

Himattice,
I have been given the task to find some one ho would set it up for us, as we have already spent to much time trying to set it up, and now simply don’t have the time to keep on trying.
If you have the experience to set it up then please help us
The server that we have tried to set it up on is completely open on all ports until the program is configurated.

I'm not a tech, just a user of the products so I don't get involved in that. It wouldn't take you long to try my suggestion. You'd need to be an admin.

Hi there,

We have tried everything we could find in this forum, and on uvnc page in general, and even some step-by-step guides on other pages. We have used many hours on trying to figure it out, without luck.

We would like someone to access our server, and set it up. We are willing to pay for it.

Our server is dedicated to be a uvnc repeater, and we would like it to run with port 443 for both supporter and customer. I has a static public IP, is placed in a datacenter, and has no firewall configured at the moment.

Anyone? Please...

Hello flemming,

May I ask a few questions:
1. What is the OS of the server that repeater running on.
2. Which tools will be used? VUNC and/or SC and /or PcHelpWare?
3.

For all I know, SC & UVNC require two diffterent ports to connect to repeater (one for viewer, and one for server). Only the PcHelpWare Repeater will handle both ends (PcHelpWare Signal) connection to port 443..... but not directly from the viewer & server, it only works when the server & viewer configured using https proxy.

Hi YY,

Sure thing...

1. It is a Windows 2003 server Std.
2. The plan was to use PcHelpWare
3. That is what I seem to understand as well. This should make it possible to use the both the sever and viewer on almost any network, since some corporate network are bloking non-standard outgoing ports in firewalls.

We have though also tried to make it work with other ports that the step-by-step guides dictate, by without any luck.

Cheers

I didn't have a chance to test this combination, and I used to believe this is possible. But recently an user reported a failure of doing so (reference [topic=14037]Repeater confusion[/topic]
I didn't get any feedback from developer or other users to confirm this. If you can install the repeater on it (best in service mode), that's nice. Otherwise, can you replace with a XP/2000 system?
On the other hand, using a Win2003 for ruuning only the repeater is too expensive/wastage.

Here are some scenario I can think of:

1. Client is direct online or via NAT router w/o proxy -- OK
2. Client connect internet via proxy, w/o or use basic authentication) -- OK
3. Client connect internet via proxy, using other authentication -- NOK
4. Client connect internet via transparent proxy --NOK

Just base on what I know and imply, I have no such facilities to run all tests in all condition.

Sure I can set up a Windows XP, and I shall "waste" another 1½ hour doing that, hopefully not in vain.
I cannot see why 2003 should be a problem though, it runs almost any Windows XP software without probs.
I have no computer that can handle this task for me already.
Thankfully since we user virtualization, it is not that wastefull in ressources anyhow.

What I would like instead is if someone, anyone would like to have a go on our windows 2003, since we have never gotten to implement that software successfully I am not sure that we are doing everything right.
There are no security measures activated on the Windows 2003 server, and the software is indeed running just fine.

I someone would with experience with the Repeater, I am sure that it would take them 5-10 minuttes and then it would be running.

We on the other hand have used almost 25 hours, and still not succeed.
Sure I could use 5 more hours, and install a windows XP machine, update it like hell, and then try again, but I will not do so, if I am not 100% certain that it will solve the problem.

Therefore I am asking here in the forum if anyone could be interested in giving it a go on our server, I will give those who wants to full access to that server, and it may cost us some money, but 5 hours of work is not a luxury I have at the moment.

Hi! Flemming,

Here are the test result of installation of PHW Repeater on Win2003.
1. Run the repeater at application mode.
No problem. The icon appeared on the Systray at once. I can access the setting, and view the log. All OK
Then I run the viewer, and make a local host connection to the repeater. No problem, it can register the ID.
The process is all the same as on XP.

2. Then I stopped the repeater (which was running as application), and at a CMD window, run the command; "phw_repeater.exe -install"
  A popup displayed "Service Installed"
Then I opened the Service Manager, and found it with the name "repeater_service", of course I started it.
A few seconds later it responsed "the service is started", but I DIDN'T SEE THE ICON at the Systray !!!

I opened the TaskManager to check if it was really running. I DIDN'T FIND IT.
Luckily, very soon I discovered I should check the box "Show process from all users", then I found it on the list.
This differs from WinXP, on XP even you havn't checked this box, it will show the System Process as well, only not display those run by other users.

Yes the repeater was running, but no Systray Icon ..... I double checked the properties of the service... the "Allow service to interact with desktop" at Logon Tag had been selected, yet it didn't help.

3. I tried to make a connection with the viewer and a created server for testing. Although I was not able to check the repeater log (no systray icon), but from the viewer's running status, I believed it was working.
However, the PHW_Server.exe was unable to run on Win2003. I don't know the reason yet.

4. Luckily again, I discovered this pc can hear 5500 & 5901 signal from internet.
That's easy, then I made two connections, a server and a viewer both running on my computer, to this repeater. BINGO!!!! Working Properly.

Final Conclusion:
The repeater can run on Win2003 as service, but the Systray Icon not function.
So you should make all setting & testing in application mode, and then switch to a service.
On the other hand, if you want to change the setting of the repeater service, you should stop the service, run the repeater in application mode and make the change, quit the application & restart the service.

Suggestion:
The Systray Icon not available is really a big trouble, as this is the only way to check the connection status of the server/viewer, especially important for trouble shooting.
As this bug doesn't exist on XP, t I believe this problem on Win2003 can be fixed easily, if the developer can spare a little time to take a look.

Hi YY

Thank you you very much, I have tested it myself, and everything works like a charm.

The systray icon was actually there when I logged on, and it still is after a reboot of the server!

I could not be happier, I have missed this setup for years now...

May be an important step I missed to do -- I havn't tried to logout and login again to see what was going on.
Thanks for the info.

Just for reference, my experience of Repeater Service on Win-XP: DON'T use the Systray Icon to stop it. Always use the Service Manager, or "Net Stop" command to stop a repeater service.
