Hello,
I am using RC18, where the viewer is on broadband and server is on dial-up. I don't know if the way doing this is correct: I ask for external IP of the dial-up computer, which without router and no other computer networked to that dial-up computer. But, I just cannot connect to the dial-up computer ("Failed to connect to server"). Password has been set, and firewall has been turned off.
Vice versa, the dial-up can connect to the broadband (which has port forwarding 5900 from a router).
Should I open port on even a dial-up connected computer? Ping to that dial-up is no problem. I use http://whatismyip.com to check the external IP of that dial-up computer.
Broadband (viewer) is on Windows XP Pro, dial-up (server) is on Windows XP Home, does that make a difference?
Thanks for any help.

Broadband to dial-up connection
Perhaps this problem is because the dial-up IP address is not available at the time of WinVNC server's launch.
What I mean is, when UltraVNC is launched, it binds to available IP addresses. For example, hover your mouse over the tray icon and you should see which IP addresses UltraVNC is listening on. If you started the server, and *then* connected the dial-up, UltraVNC may not be expecting the new IP address.
I suggest you attempt to make a script that will start the VNC server after your dial-up has connected and obtained an IP address.
This is just one user's best guess. I hope it helps you.
Cheers,
Chris

This is very good point! I hope I could resolve the problem now given this possibility of cause.darkhelmetchris wrote:Perhaps this problem is because the dial-up IP address is not available at the time of WinVNC server's launch.

Thanks!
u could go to www.whatismyip.com from the dialed in computer and ensure u have the right ip bound on the vnc server.
also if u are running xpsp2 and you didnt turn off your firewall, you are firewalled and unless u specify a port or turn it off it wont work.
