I want to run my XP box headless, no monitor. I want to connect to it via VNC. The problem is, if I restart the box, VNC isn't running until I login with the windows login screen.
Can it run *before* (or rather *during*) the windows login screen, so that I can connect with VNC and pick which user to login as?
I swear it used to do this but maybe I'm thinking of tightvnc.
WinXP32 SP3
UltraVNC 1.0.5 yes it's running as a service.
thanks

You need to install the server as a service.

Re: I want VNC to run BEFORE I login to windows.
check if software firewall block the winvnc or uvnc_service
also check the port in use.
telnet server 5900
if OK
RFB 00.3.006
if NOK
you have nothing answer

Re: I want VNC to run BEFORE I login to windows.
I have the firewall turned off.
Also, this is a fresh install of winxp, so there's pretty much nothing else running here.

Some of the firewall have a setup option to disable network access during shutting down or booting process, so if firewall is off and that feature is disbled to allow net access, then winvnc.exe should start working, you may have to wait a bit for other stuff to get ready in the background.
Before disabling the firewall, first setup that option (if ur fw has it) to allow access during booting/shutting down process, then save settings, then disable the firewall. firewall sys drivers may be still using default settings.
may be this will work : find+browse+use the "NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService" account for the WinVnc service, in "Logon" tab, for starting/loading it automatically, so you can connect to it before initiating windows logon session.
