Can connect via dynamic ip address but not static ip address

Post by Beachnut »

I have 2 PC's on a home network with wireless router. When on the home network I can connect from one PC to the other using the static ip address. No problems.

But when outside home (eg. on hotel wireless network) I can connect to the PC if I use the dynamic IP address which is shown on my router (61.7.etc...) but I cannot get a connection if I use the static ip address (192.168 etc) that I set on the PC. No error message - it just hangs and never connects.

Any ideas for trouble shooting please ?

Thanks.

192.168.*.* is your private IP address which will work on the Local Area Network (LAN), but does not work on the Wide Area Network (WAN). If you'd like the ability to connect to both PCs from the internet you can set up port forwarding to each PC. For example, PC #1 could be forwarded TCP port 5900 and the other PC could be forwarded TCP port 5901. Then to connect to PC #2 you'd connect using 61.7.*.*::5901.

You likely have a dynamic IP address so even if it works today it may not work next week when you need it. Set up a free account at DynDNS to get a hostname that'll track your public IP address.
