Hello,
I am looking for a remote control program that seems to be what SC provides. Here is the scenario
I am at my work and my dad calls me up saying that he thinks he screwed up the computer. He can get online and see the internet, but cannot figure out how to get his Outlook running.
If my dad has no remote programs on at all, has a DSL line behind a typical Linksys router, how would I reach him? Could I email him the SC client and it will connect to my VNC Server? Does he have to configure anything on his firewall. I really like LogMeIn but sometimes people don't want or can't figure out how to setup a LogMeIn account. My dad is 75 so can't really blame him on this one.
If SC cannot do this and traverse a firewall dynamically like LogMeIn can, what other free options are out there?
Thanks!

Confused about SC
Re: Confused about SC
SC is what I use all the time to support remote clients. It eliminates the need for a client to configure anything (not even on the router).
You will have to generate the SC exe that can be sent and placed on your Dad's desktop.
You will have to run UltraVNC Viewer in listen mode before SC can connect to it.
I'm using version 1.0.1. I don't think SC exists for the newer versions that are Vista compatible, but not absolutely sure.

Re: Confused about SC
Thank you very much for the reply.
So I could setup a VNC Server (or Listener is the correct term?) on say my Web Server. Once I configure SC to point to my VNC Server, I can send the exe, or a zip of the SC.exe that is preconfigured by me, to my dad, or frankly anyone that wants to connect.
All he would have to do is unzip the file, run the sc.exe and he would "reverse connect" to my VNC server and I can see him?
Sorry if I sound like a dunce here, just trying to make sure I am understanding this as I have never used VNC.
Thanks!

Re: Confused about SC
Yes, that's pretty much it. I don't leave my "UltraVNC Viewer (Listen Mode)" up and running. My clients have to call me, then I launch the app "UltraVNC Viewer (Listen Mode)" on my PC, and then I tell them to click on the SC ICON they created on their desktop.venom wrote:Thank you very much for the reply.

FWIW: Your PC will be the viewer and your Dad's PC is the server. The cool thing about SC is that the server initiates the connection, bypassing the Firewall security issues on your Dad's LAN, that would exist if you tried to initiate the connection.
Read the sticky's in the forum and just try it, you'll learn a lot very fast.
Re: Confused about SC
Hello,
Thanks for the post. Well I got VNC Listner Server up and can connect to my test system via the UVNC Viewer without a problem.
Setting up UNVC SC has been tough though. I guess I may have this idea backwards.
I followed all the links and how too's on the website. Whenever I test the custom.exe it never seems to connect, it just creates an icon in the task bar. How am I to reach someone without knowing their WAN IP unless I were to go to whatismyip.com or something like that.
I thought SC was to somehow connect to my server and then I would see their IP. Then I double click their IP and can view their system. I don't necessarily want others to see my server, i just want a quick and easy way to reach their desktop.
Do i have this backwards?
Thanks!

Re: Confused about SC
I setup a repeater as well, but I am dumb founded on if I am supposed to use the Viewer in Listen mode, the Server or the Repeater and how to let the repeater work properly.
I have to say the instructions for setting up SC seem to be fine for the most part, but I haven't been able to find out what you are supposed to setup on the server itself? Meaning my server that clients will be connecting to using SC.
Thanks

Re: Confused about SC
When you create the SC exe your dad will use, you must put in your public ip address. If you have a static IP it's not a problem... ever. If you have a dynamic (DHCP) IP assigned by your ISP you can use it, but it will eventually change and then your dad can't access you. You can probably test it this way. I have access via cable and my IP rarely changes.
To get around a DHCP assigned IP, you have to use Dynamic DNS. Most recent routers have the capability to use dyndns.com (or org) to let you assign a domain name (this would be on your router, not you dad's). If your router doesn't have the ability to use dyndns.com (or something similar), you can download their updater program and run it on your PC.
Your router (not your dad's) will also have to forward port 5900 to your Uvnc Viewer PC on your LAN. If you understand all this IP stuff, your good to go. If not, get a geek to help you out.
I can't tell if you get that your dad is the "server" and he is connecting to you, the "viewer", so you can "view" his PC. Work with it a while and it will become clear.
You don't need the repeater. Get your dad connecting / communicating before getting into that. All you need is the viewer in listening mode and the SC exe on you dad's PC and what I explained above.
Good Luck
