How to use VNC over the internet?
Yes I am a complete noob so please bear with me. I've been trying to connect to one of my other computers at my parent's place. When I set up my VNC server (ultraVNC, RealVNC, echoVNC, TightVNC......) and hover over the taskbar icon, it would always give me the local LAN IP address. I've been searching all over and I still have not a single clue on how to get it to display the WAN IP (or whatever it's supposed to say). I can connect to computers over LAN fine but I just want to be able to do it over the internet. I have an Apple Airport extreme router with all the ports for VNC opened. How would I get this to work?!

Visit http://whatismyip.com/ from the machine running the server.
Re: How to use VNC over the internet?
to use vnc over the internet you need the port number of the ultravnc server exposed publically ie you should see the internet ip address when you take your mouse over the vnc icon.
if you cannot see that you will look into port forwarding, every setup has a different way of opening a port / do port forwarding
if you want to more help you will start to give more specific information like the os version you are using on the server, client, the gateway on the server, the type of connection you are using to connect to internet and so on.

That's ok, you still need to use your public IP address you see at the link I provided.

So even though it still says my local IP, when I'm not connected to the LAN and enter the public IP, it should connect fine?

Visit https://www.grc.com/x/portprobe=5900 and it'll tell you whether or not your port is open and will also tell you your public IP. If it says Stealth or Closed you have work to do.
Re: How to use VNC over the internet?
I'm having the same problem.
Whenever I hover over the icon, I get my local IP address. [192.168.1.128]
From that site from mattice I get
The GRC server is attempting to establish a TCP
connection to Port 5900 of your computer located
at Internet at IP address 67.174.164.27:
5900
Stealth vnc access
Virtual Network Computing
How do I change that 192.168.1.128 address to 67.174.164.27?
That's the only problem, so as soon as I change that, it should work.

you can delete Port Mapping... UDP port 5800, 5900, 5500 is not used at all.
VNC use only TCP port

Ok I see, I checked out that site and it said 5900 was open for me. VNC Server still says the Local IP but that shouldn't matter right? I just enter my WAN IP when I'm away from home and it should connect fine?
