Trying to avoid using port numbers, Any suggestions?

Post by dhazer »

I was wondering if it was possible to use DNS entries or some sort of free service to simplify all the machines that I have to remember in order to login to.

For example, I'd rather enter mark.mysite.com rather than mysite.com:5913

Has anyone found an easier way to manage/administer their growing list of computers?

In my home I have 3 machines all running UltraVNC as a service listening on port 5900. I have one machine that's on all the time which runs the repeater. I then connect using the repeater and I enter the machine name in the VNC Server: dialog. That way I don't need to remember which machine is listening on which port because they are all listening on the same port.

Another alternative is after you connect to a machine you can right click on the title bar and save the VNC session with a meaningful name that you'll remember. Then you use the VNC-file for connecting in the future.

dyndns.com can do ip forward to other IP too

e.g. plouf.dyndns.com will redirect to plouf.com:5901
plouf-home.dyndns.com redirect to plouf.com:5902
plouf-around.dyndns.com to 172.172.172.172:80 etc

is this what you wand ?

What Plouf is talking about sounds like what I'm looking for. But after a thorough search of dyndns.com's services, I cannot seem to find what are of the site would provide that service and how it could be provided (https://www.dyndns.com/services/)

I assume it would probably be related to one of the functions of the web hop service (http://www.dyndns.com/services/webredirect/); and since I've already an account I tried the "add a host" and "manage hosts" buttons to only receive an error for including a colon and port number in the IP Address input box.

I must be missing something that's probably incredibly simple; if so, please fill me in.

Thanks for the replies,
Dan

Hello I have a Question of my own I alredy set up an account on dyndns and what else do i need to set up to get VNC to work? I dont want to open ports on my router. From my understanding you still need one port open to make the repeater work.
