vnc with rendezvous

Post by metafunction »

Hi,

For days I've been connecting smoothly to my OSX VNC server by using its rendezvous name (itunes.local). Each time I connected I would get a password screen. Last night my network had a meltdown and stopped working, so I had to test everything piece by piece. By this morning, everything was working except that I could only connect a windows machine to my VNC server using its IP address. I think this is VNC specific because the rendezvous web browser plugin is working fine. A Mac also has no trouble using the rendezvous name to connect. Furthermore, recently I can connect to the server from any machine (using an IP address on the windows machine) without supplying a password!
Yes, I've rebooted everything multiple times.

I'm utterly baffled now. Anyone have a clue?

Thanks in advance!

First Q - what version are you running? e.g. RC_18

Regarding connections to your server without a password. Good question - Even with the MS logon utility you have to manually specify the username and pw, unless there is some sort of auto caching enabled? I would double check your settings on your server, if MS logon is enabled disable it and specify a Test Password. Just for grins a different one.

And as far as you only being able to connect via IP now it is very hard for me to believe that it is a VNC problem. Since from what I gather is everything is the same and the only thing that changed was that you had network issues. VNC doesnt do anything more than try to connect using the localhosts information (DNS /WINS / NETBIOS/ Ect). So if the local host doesnt know what itunes.local is then VNC cant connect to something the local host cant connect to.

You can always specify in the host file on the Windows machine the name to Ip resolution however I dont suggest using this too much more than troubleshooting. By adding it and seeing if it connects then, and then taking it out. Maintaining host files on all windows computer is a pain.

Apple Rendezvous is now called Apple Bonjour, by the way.

There is a free Apple client for Bonjour that runs on Windows XP, but I honestly don't know what it is good for.
