General simple Qs on UltraVNC

Post by Iam8up »

First of all, being my first post, I have to really compliment the Devs of this project - it's really fantastic, great work everyone. I previously used RealVNC until they started to lean corporate (I'm just that sorta way). This is unbelievably just remarkable. With the simple features of auto-scaling and file transfer you had me hooked - simple but extremely convenient when your school's proxy server blocks port 21 =(

My questions are very simple, trust me...

-How can I make auto-scaling enabled by DEFAULT?
-What does the repeater do? I don't understand the FAQs about it. I do run VNC Servers on three of my machines, but what I understand is that the servers run on a different port, and so requiring the firewall to open that port as well - where does the repeater help here?
-If I change the VNC Server port, does the file transfer port change as well?

- Autoscaling as default: you can save your current viewer configuration in a .vnc file on your desktop then double-click on it next time you want tot run the viewer. To create a .vnc file: once connected, right-click on the viewer title-bar, then select "Save Connection info as...".
It works for any viewer setting that you'd like to be "automatic" at viewer startup.

- The FileTransfer port always uses the current VNC port, whatever this VNC port

Thank you for the information...

I read that FAQ already, but I still don't understand - if you type ID:1111 in the viewer it will look for a hostname of 'ID' - how do you manage to get to the outside IP for your 5901 repeater?

yea as you say, the repeater is somewhat difficult to understand without an image drawn :p
lemme just say it's some sort of simple proxy server.
it stands in the middle of connection and translates IP addresses to repeater IDs. (am i correct?)
the advantage is that when the repeater is properly used you don't have to care about connectivity problem caused by firewalls, or threaten crisis of your host revealed out to the public so some people would try cracking.

That is what I really needed - thank you very much - and thank everyone else that posted to help me, really appreciate it...now off to config a repeater =)

yes, but as far as I understand the repeater must sit in a publicly open PC and have a real IP associated with it.
So you cannot set the repeater to act from a machine inside a network without a proper visible IP.

I disagree.

Both of these clearly state that you can run it internal on your network only forwarding a specific port to initiate and create a connection for either version of the repeater RC18 or RC19.
