Are you certain you set up the port forwarding on your router correctly? Most cases your firewall / proxy wont stop a port that it doesnt recognize and is being initiated from an internal computer... respectively your rules at school could be different.

http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm

find your router there it is listed.. ensure you have the port forwarding to the server correctly done.

It should work just fine over port 80, but problem is - forwarding 80 to your home computer may get it hammered with requests / probes ect. That holds true for your ftp idea also. Those are well known ports and those are the ones looked at first by kiddies.

My suggestion to you is to .. from school.. use - http://www.hackerwhacker.com/freetools.php to find a port thats not blocked. (Have fun) Then use that port through the web viewer and set up that port to be forwarded internally through your router.

actually i have manged to get it working on port 8081 for the java vnc bit over the net, but when i set it to port 8080 through the normal viewer i get failed to connect to server

Vampiro,

I have the exact same router, the 614+, and I'm using it on my home computer (running XP). I can access my home computer from my work computer just fine. I had to "educate" the router to accept ports 5900 from the WAN side and send the incoming request to the LAN side, specifically to my one home computer's IP address. I also set it up so the browser-based Java screens are visible from any computer with a web connection, even if that computer doesn't have UltraVNC Viewer installed.

I can send you screen shots of my router's setup screens if that will help you. Send me an e-mail directly to:

fredNOSPAMthomke@yahoo.com

(take out the "NOSPAM" for my real address)

I also sent you a private message with the same information.
