Ultravnc Server in Listen Mode

Post by cpufix »

I provide support to several sites with several PCs in each site, I want to connect to any PC at any time with out the remote user having to start the server.

Is there a way to put Ultra Server/s into listen mode, and have these server/s sit in a UltraVNC repeater list until a viewer attempts to make a connection.

I have configured the VNC Manager such that double clicking the PC connects the viewer to the repeater, if the server is in the list (currently done manually) the vnc connection is made.

So all I need is the server/s placed into listen mode.

The way I handle this is by installing the UltraVNC server as a service on each PC I'll need to access. I then set up a repeater on a server in the same LAN and set up port forwarding of the Viewer connections to the server running the repeater. When connecting using the viewer you use Proxy/Repeater.

Thanks for your reply, I was also trying to make the connection without making changes to the remote firewall.
By having the server in listen mode my intention is to connect out to a Internet based repeater, as the connection is outgoing it would not need the port forwarding.

The server is listening for connections by default. It sounds like you'd like to be able to get a SingleClick or PcHelpWare type connection (where you have a viewer running in listening mode waiting for a server connection), but your customer isn't on the other end to initiate the connection.

Redge has a post that may be helpful, [topic=5612]connecting to an office PC from home[/topic].

cpufix,

your ultravnc server don't run as service. this the reason why winvnc is not listening.
uninstall and then install again and check that you allow winvnc run as service system while follow the process of setup.

Thank you for your reply.
I have reinstalled Ultravnc server as a service, I can add a client manually which shows up in my DMZ repeater ok. I could also do this prior to reinstall.

So how do we run the server as a service and have it automatically connect to the repeater ?

I have tried -autoreconnect ID:4402 -connect XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX::5500 added to the start parameters of the service.
Tried this on the command line does not work.

Looks like I need to know what ADD CLIENT does as a command line

Thanks redge,
I have retested on a Win XP Pro PC and have found with version 1.0.2 that the server does not place an Icon on the tray when started as a service.
Uninstalling and installing version 1.0.4 RC6 works fine.
Adding -autoreconnect ID:4402 -connect 111.111.111.111 -service
in the registry setting for the service works ok.
That is the server shows up in the repeater.

Tried the same on a Win 2000 server SP4 and can not get the server icon to appear on the tray when run as a service. Service indicates it has started.

There are several posts on this problem, has anyone resolved the problem on a Win2000 server
