Video driver - pro's and con's

Post by Vincent »

I just installed the videodrivers on my server and noticed the speed improvements. Very nice. I am thinking about installing them on my workstation as well (which I also use remotely every now and then), but I was wondering: are there any negative side effects on using these drivers (e.g. higher CPU usage when the PC isn't remotely used)? If not, why aren't they installed automatically when installing Ultr@VNC?

Pro
+ Video driver is only used during connection end desactivated while not connected. No overhead while not connected.
+ Driver speed and lower cpu .

Contra:
+The driver use kernel memory, every mistake in memory handling can cause a BSOD instead of a application warning.
I'm using it on a HT PIV and a nvida card without a BSOD for about year, but there are reports of crashes. If the vnc server is not running stable without the driver, don't use it.
+You can not use video hardware acceleration during connection, certain games will not work. Most recent applications (like media player) does online detection and switch in correct mode when driver is activated

Thanks for your reply :)

Let's see if I get this right: the contra's are only applicable during a remote connection? So the drivers aren't activated and won't cause any trouble when I am not remotely connected?
