Can't connect to Win98 from XP, other way is ok
Can't connect to Win98 from XP, other way is ok
I can run UVNC as a server on XP Home computer, with Win98 as viewer.
The other way around, with 98 as server and XP as viewer doesn't work.
Error message: Failed to connect to server!
Both computers are on my internal network, with 192.168.0.xxx
Can I get any clues in some log, or any ideas from here?
I run ver 1.5, it was similar problem on 1.4

No XP firewall
No, the internal firewall is not active on this network card.
I use ZoneAlarm, where this local NT computer is trusted - no alarm is reported.
When I look at the NT system, the UVNC icon is light blue, but 'list all users' show nothing.
On XP, viewer tells me status is connected (at first). When I go to the black window on XP after a while, and try to send any key, it closes and disappears.
So obviously the connection is broken quite soon.
Are there any parameters I can try for format/encoding? Any logs that can indicate something?
(It is still working to run viewer from Win98, w NT as server.)

More info on XP-NT problem
I can now connect from XP to Win98, and from that window run Viewer to the NT Server!
Encoder to Win98 is ZRLE, from there to NT ZlibHex.
But I still can't connect directly from XP to NT.
(It says '.. initial reading screen..' and stays black.)
But I also have problems doing a direct network connection between NT and Xp, using shared folders. So the problem may be a XP-NT one.

You may just have a conflict with ZoneAlarm. I run a small home network with 3 computers behind a Netgear router. All could ping and UltraVNC each other, as server and viewer, except one stubborn Win98 machine would not respond to inbound pings. I had installed then removed ZoneAlarm over 2 years ago on this machine, but last night found it had left a few files in the registry, including a pesky file called "vsdata95.vxd" in the windows\system directory. It was very difficult to remove, but once I did, voila! I now have an all-pinging all-dancing all-UltraVNCing network.
Perhaps you should uninstall ZoneAlarm completely, then try the VNC.
If it works then, try reinstalling ZoneAlarm.
Good luck!

Thanks for your advice, but I fail to see how ZoneAlarm can be the problem. I have ZoneAlarm on XP and 98, not on NT. It is setup to allow all IPs in the internal network.
And in fact, Ultra VNC works from XP (viewer) to 98 (server). The problem is only from XP with NT as server.
And I can ping in all directions without problem.
In NT4 I have problems accessing shared folders on XP, and also vice versa. I can view the folders, but then it 'chokes'.
Maybe it can be too many protocols running on (my old) NT?

Still stuck
It 's the same situation, can't connect from XP Home (Viewer) to NT4 (Server).
I started logging in VNCViewer (RC15, XP). The connection and password seems ok, at the end it shows:

problems with NT
I can confirm that I too have problems connecting an NT 4.0 UVNC Viewer (RC 14) to an XP machine running UVNC server (RC14) and ZoneAlarm.
I tried everything, but simply does not work. The connection cannot be established. (And yes ZoneAlarm is set to let UVNC traffic pass).
Once ZoneAlarm is switched off, the connection establishes 100% perfectly with no problems. If I restart ZoneAlarm while remote controlling the other machine, the connection immediately stops/disappears.
I have NO problem at all connecting from a different PC with win98 Viewer Rc14 to the same XP server running the same UVNC server RC14 and the same Zonealarm (unning).
So the problem ONLY affects the combination NT->XP
The problem was NOT present in previous versions (11d) of UVNC, so should be a recent bug.

Thanks for the propsals.
I have now gone back to ver 11d, but the problem seems to be the same.

.. and .. ?
Should I do anything special for this?
I have uninstalled rc15, reinstalled 11d.
(I installed 11d from the very beginning, and had the same problem from the start.)
I haven't noticed that I should have to do any special installation of video drivers.
Please correct me, if I missed anything!

setupdrv ?
Should I run it on viewer or server? (I guess server, but it is required for NT4?)
And what keys in the registry should be removed?
I have some keys from RealVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC.
They were all uninstalled, but obviously they don't tidy up the registry afterwards.
What keys are vital for UltraVNC, and might cause trouble if not correct?
(I just found some information in FAQ about the registry.)
But is there any explanation available of when and where setupdrv is needed?

Still black screen watching NT from XP
I can't find any solution, it is still the same. I connect from XP to an NT UVNC server, and the screen remains black.
I can connect from Win98 to the same NT machine without problem. I can also connect from XP to Win98, and vice versa.
I guess NT and XP just don't like each other?
(There are also problems connecting to files over the network between the same machines.)
Any hints of what to try, where to look, anyone?
