I'm getting the "Error reading Protocol Version" when I try to connect to a friends computer. I have DSL and they have a Satellite Internet connection. Could that be the problem?
I've haven't had this problem with anybody else but them.
Thanks.

Connecting through Satellite Internet problem
Re: Connecting through Satellite Internet problem
I forgot to add. I'm running WinXP Pro and the Satellite connection is Windows 2000.HoggDogg wrote:I'm getting the "Error reading Protocol Version" when I try to connect to a friends computer. I have DSL and they have a Satellite Internet connection. Could that be the problem?

is the satellite connection direcway "home" edition? if yes, then your problem lies in the fact that even though the proper ports may be open on the server machine (behind the satellite), the satellite system itself isn't allowing the traffic through to the server, or something along those lines.
the "true" fix is to upgrade to the business edition, but this, obviously, costs more, etc.
another fix is to run openvpn between the two systems, then run ultravnc through the tunnel.
unless the multitudes are willing to read the details as to how this may be done, i would suggest that you contact me privately via email
mrclisdue(nospam)(at)yahoodotcom
and i will walk you through it in detail.
cheers

hey,
it's not so much that the rest of the list may or may not be interested, it's just that i would expect many, many posts between the two of us before you'd get it running properly - it took me almost a month, and very much hair loss, plus a few posts to the openvpn forums, before I was successful.
Initially, download the gui version of openvpn from openvpn.sourceforge.net.
Assuming that the vpn tunnel will be only between the satellite pc and one other, a direct peer-to-peer tunnel (as opposed to a server-client model) would be the way to go, at first, anyway. Once you become familiar with openvpn and it's many nuances, you may want to implement other variations.
You would also want to establish accounts for each pc with no-ip.com - this enables you to have a static ip address for each pc even though the ip's are dynamic.
Before I continue, I need to know what os's you're using.
cheers,

I see another OpenVPN convert. Are you using 1.6 or 2.0 Beta?[/quote]
I'm using 2.0 beta19, with the most recent gui, as well. As with UVNC, I tend to update frequently so as to help those who spend many thankless hours developing these wonderful programs.......
ah yes, i can suck up as well as anyone

Ok, I downloaded and installed the VPN software, now I have a virtual ethernet adapter that says it's unplugged.
I haven't installed it on the satellite computer yet, but I can't get to that for a few days, but I at least can learn what to do on mine first then repeat the steps for the other computer on satellite.
