The SC pages describe the product this way: "Size: UltraVNC is about 650k while SC is only 166k "
Seems that I cant find that sized SC package and not a even the plain UltraVnc SC version anywhere. Only the more complicated packages are available
SC II III
SCII (based on RC23)
SCII (based on 1.00)
SCIII
Also how is the SC licensing???
UltraVNC = GNU
PCHelpware = GPL
But what is the licencing policy for the SC version?
These UVNC pages are quite difficult or more bluntly and unpolitely said they are messy. The Download pages are scattered here and there in the Menus. You do not know what is related to what. For instance the SC Download page offers Repeater on top of the page, but not the plain SC itself.
I probably would need the SC version for helpdesk purposes, but seeing the PCHelpware pages I got interested about it too.
Yet I do not understand what exactly should PCHelpware do. I could get it's icon appear to the right hand corner, but what then?? I even got the Delphi example about PCHelpware to compiled and run. But again, what the heck should that undocumented piece of software do in the lower right hand corner?
Sorry, this probably was not the most constructive way to start a discussion, but this is how my own customers start with me too When they do not undestand how to use my apps, and what should these apps actually do they usually send me slightly bitter toned e-mails in the beginning.
I'm not bitter, I just do not understand. I've got UltraVNC to work all right and it's fast and steady. I just would need some more easily available solution for new customers to install for support purposes, and that's why I was looking into SC version.
Thanks for any comments.
Peter

Re: Where's the 166 kB SC-version?
The online creator send you the SC version in a single exe together with the uploaded configs (online creation of the exe)
You make a helpdesk.txt (config file) add some icons and bmp and upload it as zip via the online creator, in return you get the full exe that
include all to run as Single Click.
The exe is a 7zip archieve, to get the individual winvnc (166k) you need to extract it via 7zip.
Ultravnc =GPL ( can't be bundled with commercil apps)
UltraVnc SC = GPL ( can't be bundled with commercil apps)
PcHelpware = freeware (commercial bundling allowed)

Now I am totally dropped!? Should I somehow use this Online Creator page to get me the SC version, or what is this all about??Rudi De Vos wrote:The online creator send you the SC version in a single exe together with the uploaded configs (online creation of the exe)

Huh, why not tell that same in plain English on that same page. That the only way to get SC is to use this Creator utility?Rudi De Vos wrote: You make a helpdesk.txt (config file) add some icons and bmp and upload it as zip via the online creator, in return you get the full exe that

Says who?? All info I can find is this page that says that at leat UltraVNC is under GNU licence. And therefore I could easily include it also to my commercial apps.Rudi De Vos wrote: Ultravnc =GPL ( can't be bundled with commercil apps)

But what is the licensing situation with the SC version? GNU, GPL or what?
Thanks

Re: Where's the 166 kB SC-version?
I guess that when the winvnc.exe from SC could be downloaded standalone you would be even more dropped becuase it does nothing. Now I am totally dropped!? Should I somehow use this Online Creator page to get me the SC version, or what is this all about??

UltraVNC SC is a bundle of files, in a single self extracting exe that NEED to be customized by you.
Perfect explained on the webpages

GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE, where do you think the GPL stand for..Says who?? All info I can find is this page that says that at leat UltraVNC is under GNU licence. And therefore I could easily include it also to my commercial apps.

UltraVnc SC has the same license as UltraVnc, have to be, see the GPL license himself.
GPL allow the commercial usage, but you can't bundle it together with commercial application.
You can use it to support commercial application as long you don't distributed it together.
*People download SC from your webpage --> OK
*You create a single installer that contain priority and GPL software -> NOT allowed
Re: Where's the 166 kB SC-version?
Sorry, this was not the first time I accidentally mis-use these different "Free" licence namings and terms.Rudi De Vos wrote: GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE, where do you think the GPL stand for..
It was some three years back I last checked one of these GPL licences. Then I found that there was no mean for me to even keep that GPL licenced application downoadable on my web site. Or not to include it on my installation CD either.
To me it looks like this GNU licence would be different from that text that I read 3 years back. Looks like this would allow me to distribute UltraVNC along on my commercial application's installation CD:GPL allow the commercial usage, but you can't bundle it together with commercial application.

- "These requirements apply to the modified work as a whole. If
identifiable sections of that work are not derived from the Program,
and can be reasonably considered independent and separate works in
themselves, then this License, and its terms, do not apply to those
sections when you distribute them as separate works. But when you
distribute the same sections as part of a whole which is a work based
on the Program, the distribution of the whole must be on the terms of
this License, whose permissions for other licensees extend to the
entire whole, and thus to each and every part regardless of who wrote it.
- "Thus, it is not the intent of this section to claim rights or contest
your rights to work written entirely by you; rather, the intent is to
exercise the right to control the distribution of derivative or
collective works based on the Program."
"In addition, mere aggregation of another work not based on the Program
with the Program (or with a work based on the Program) on a volume of
a storage or distribution medium does not bring the other work under
the scope of this License."
At least the latter section says that if I distribute UltraVNC along on my installatuon CD, then that the UltraVNC authors definitely have no intention to try to claim that this action would bring also my commercial app under the terms of open GPL licence, or that they would get some kind of right to claim that part of the profits of my distribution package would belong to them also.
Thanks
