Linux version
Linux version
I'd like a Linux version of Ultr@VNC. I'd use the file transfer capabilites a LOT.
I already use the client under Wine, but that doesn't help me with the server.

Hard working, hard working...
It's hard only because my Java knowledge is quite reduced and I'm spending a lot of time diving into the java doc...
Any help about Java security (regarding applet privileges) is welcome.
The JavaViewer with FileTransfer1.18a (alphai) s available here:
http://dl.ultravnc.net
For the server side, we don't plan to port it to Linux for now.

doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me to not have any plans at all to make the server version run on linux as well. MS will always push all corporations to use their latest windows product by pricing them the new and 2nd newest versions within $5 of one another (2k licenses cost nearly the exact same as XP) and with XP comes the built-in TS which is easily enough put to use by administrators.
For argument's sake, assuming the entire planet were to dish out the money for XP (which its not, thats where I use it primarily now is on the win2k workstations where I work) or upgrade in some form or another. The only applications left to use it on would be with servers that have programs that must run that dont work as services (rare, weak), in place of tsadmin, on linux servers with multisession, or in place of webex or streaming desktop (which is kind hard, vnc cant hang with those just yet).
It's hard to argue that most of the applications VNC has (and all I've ever seen it used for in administration) is on a win2k workstation. Once that's gone, and granted it will take a few more years but it will happen, most of the reason to use VNC in a windows environment will be gone as well.
Plus, as far as the server application, I'd really like to be able to relay from the internet through a linux machine
Dont get me wrong, I love UVNC and recommend it to every administrator I've met with such a need. It'd make my day to have a linux version though

For linux server Tight and realvnc need to be used.
Most of the server changes we made does not make sense on a non winodws platform.
driver: not needed on linux, is already fast
ms-logon: make no sense on linux.
Just wondering, windows ce has a great emulator, does MS allow to run 10 emulators with vnc on a xp box and use it for web distribution of applications.

Well, mslogin or ldap auth..i guess that could get pretty hairy
I didnt think about the video hook driver for linux, perhaps using the built in framebuffering of the kernel..you could make a module for it! (..ok so that may suck to do, just a suggestion!)
The relay server and file transfer capabilities would be very nice though. Honestly I dont use vnc on my linux machines often, only to show off to visitors really. Having the ability to pull my last windows machine off the DMZ would be very nice though
Plus, you could say you offer your solution for all OS's of any mix, a lot of IT directors that look for buzzwords like that may like it.

Linux client
I'm looking for a Linux vncviewer version that will let me send Username information so I can connect to a Windows box that's using AD authentication.

There exist a patch for for linux
http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-li ... 45424.html
Perhaps someone can patch and compile the real unix viewer.
Or wait a few days, a java version is almost finished.
Java should run on all Os's

forgive the troll-esque comments, but i'd like to speak openly and honestly. please put emotional responses aside, and be as objective, since i'm trying to do the same, as best i can at least.
i was pretty hopeful when i saw the project, i liked the extra features. in fact, i was kind of excited to try it out.
i even had planned where i'd run it. then, now that i see it doesn't work with X11 desktops, i'm rather disappointed.
it's of absolutely no use to me now, since i don't have a single windows server, or windows computer for that matter. windows was always a desktop os, why don't i setup a skyos or syllable server? they're about as useful, and consequently of my opinion that win32 makes a terrible server platform (again, "opinion",) i can only conclude that ultravnc is equally useless.
now, java is a great multiplatform way to share the abilities and features of ultravnc, however, it wouldn't actually be ultravnc at all-- would it? additionally, i'm about as likely to run a java program as a server as i am of wiping my linux servers and installing win32. not remotely likely.
that said, i would like to request that the 'linux' catagory be removed from the freshmeat entry, and that the project openly state that it is win32 specific, because it is.
if i write a web server that runs only on linux but people on windows can still retrieve content on it on their IE browser, does that catagorize it in win32 also? no.
i'm not trying to be petty in saying it, but as a fact, i've just wasted my time reviewing this project.

You see web and win32, no mentioning of unix...
Our project is hosted on sourceforge, we don't use freshmeat.
Googling for ultravnc/freshmeat/unix --> result nada.
Where is statet that ultravnc is a unix project ?
Can you provide the link...

I most certainly can:

The screenshot there is sporting a win98 desktop being hosted, and on the project particulars it's in the X11::Applications, POSIX, POSIX::Linux, and Unix catagories in addition to the Windows catagory.

Please do not make such a fuss for nothing!
Ultravnc is a great project for those millions of people using Windows OS (the vast majority out there today). And from what I understand the need for it will be here for many many years to come (do not overestimate what bill gates put to your use..)
For linux please go to TightVNC. They have a lot of good features and they also have file transfer experimental (in beta, but working).

ultravnc-ish vnc server for linux - vnc4server
There were a few people in this thread looking for something like an ultravnc server for Linux. It's in the Debian package 'vnc4server', or you can download it from the xf4vnc sourceforge project here: http://xf4vnc.sourceforge.net/doc.html
It's an X Server extension. Install it:
In XF86Config add the following to the MODULE section:
And in the SCREEN section:
To get the "passwd" file, do this:
It doesn't support file transfer, but its speed should be comparable to TightVNC's, because this is analogous to a video driver hook, only things are a little bit different in the X Window System, because one can hook into the X protocol (communication between xclients like xterm and mozilla and the server) instead, which means that there is less data to be processed by the vnc server code -- lower cpu use on the server side when active.
It's an X Server extension. Install it:
Code: Select all
apt-get install vnc4server
Code: Select all
Load "vnc"
Code: Select all
Option "passwordfile" "/home/someuser/.vnc/passwd"
Code: Select all
vncpasswd /home/someuser/.vnc/passwd
new tightvnc supports filetransfer, so for linux users the decission is easy.
