not sure how to connect to uvnc repeater

Post by marf999 »

here's a picture of my screen
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/8321/conrepbe7.jpg

(don't worry, i won't use that id again!)

Startign the "viewer app"

alias:
password:
id:

host repeater:
listen port viewer:
listen port server:

There's a test button.

but when I do

host repeater: uvnc.com
listen port viewer: 5901
listen server viewer: 5500
and I click TEST
, it says failed to connect to viewer port, failed to connect to server port.

As far as I understand..
my viewer on compA isn't meant to be listening, it just makes an outgoing connection, to the repeater.
my server on compB, can listen if it wants but really it makes an outgoing connection to the repeater too.

So if it's testing which ports are listening, it should be testing the repeater.

I don't see why this is failing.. Have I got the ports wrong? These were the ports listed in a pdf called PChelpware stsep by step version 10. Up till there i've been ok.

the repeater fail or down
try another repeater like repeater01.ultravnc.info
UltraVNC 1.0.9.6.1 (built 20110518)
OS Win: xp home + vista business + 7 home
only experienced user, not developer

thanks, i'll test this further tomorrow, but a preliminary test shows your suggestion to have worked perfectly. It's now moved a stage forward.

no need to enter alias or password to test repeater.
Alias is just for what directory to put the server exe in if creating one.
Password is for when starting the viewer, or for when creating a server.
Hence both left blank.

Clicking Test button shows repeater working ok.

I will test this further tomorrow, but this looks very promising.

thank you.

ok, i did it. The next stupid thing was that when you run the server EXE,
it asks for a

login and password.

If a direct connection(not repeater), it says login but it's nulled out. But when doing it via repeater, you enter the "id" for login.
I figured that out from checking the status windows on the server when it failed. I had entered the alias for the login. Turns out that just as in the direct connection method, the "alias" is purely the directory(folder) that the server EXE is placed in after creation.

software works - technically. But it's very unintuitive. Clearly no clear thought was given to the GUI.

You've taken the idea of making things easy for the end user, who just has to click an EXE. But you've forgotton about the geek.

Anyhow, I got it working. It helped a bit to check netstat -an to see what was going on a bit behind the scenes.

Through repeater is a bit slow.. buit maybe that's just 'cos through internet, and any direct connecion over the internet will be just as slow. But a good idea technically.

Next i'll try the repeater without the single click / EXE.. seems to involve plain uvnc, the uvnc viewer program, but it's described on a pchelpware page http://www.uvnc.com/pchelpware/repeater/index.html
Not suprising that the GUI is such a shambles. The website is also a shambles. can't find a damn thing. And when I do, it's hard to find how I found it. Fortunate that I note all the links i find in a txt file.

I'm glad you figured out the "ID is password" bit. Thanks for the tip

On the other hand... I'm frustrated, too, but considering it IS free, and it DOES work, how about complaining politely? It wouldn't do us much good if the PcHelpware developers read enough posts like yours and eventually say, "Screw it. I quit."

P.S. - Firefox includes a spell checker. Check it out at http://www.getfirefox.com
